We are all very familiar with the over-exaggerated natural disaster movies where the weather phenomena is over the top with the acting leaving more to be desired. Movies such as "2012" and "The Day After Tomorrow" (a personal favorite, I might add) bring to life many of the fears severe Climate Change and the impact humanity has on it. Often times these movies bomb in the box office. But why is that? It isn't always the case, but "Geostorm" wasn't exactly a box office blowout.
So, why should we be paying more attention to these box office crashes as opposed to feeding on the Marvel action movies and the newest comedy to release? Because climate change is real. Now, Global Warming is all over the media as just that, "Global Warming." However, evidence shows it isn't just about rising temperatures, though this is a growing problem. Does anyone remember how increasingly devastating our hurricane season has gotten? Or even Superstorm Sandy in the Northeast United States?
In "The Day After Tomorrow" there were several storm cells that could be seen from outer space and bashed the northern hemisphere with blizzard extremes and flooding. In "2012" earthquakes devastated the West Coast and India went under water. We saw in the news the very REAL consequences of our treatment of the environment just in 2017. Hurricanes of the strongest kind battered the Gulf and East Coasts. 2018 is starting off with record LOWS in some places as well. These are the very real things happening right in front of us.
How can we stop it? Well, I don't believe that we can. It is probably bound to happen. I am no climatologist, environmentalist, or any type of -ist, so my credentials are nil. But, in my research over many years of education, both free and paid for, there are tons of solutions to help. We all know of the types of energy we can utilize other than fossil fuels that produce fewer toxic emissions.
These are VERY extreme, but we live in a world of extremes. Let's be honest. Just this last hurricane season we saw three very strong storms at the same exact time with paths heading towards the United States. Wake up. Storms are getting stronger. Polar caps are melting. One thing they do not put in the media, but is touched on only if you visit a Zoo once in a while, is dying species. Extinction.
I am not an educated scientist with a PhD and I have never been published in any esteemed journal, but I am definitely aware of what is happening in our world. Also, I am not talking about going out and buying a Prius or digging through every garbage can in your neighborhood and finding every possible recyclable item and deliver it to the recycle place. Every small change you can make to lower your carbon footprint is a step in the right direction, even if it only prolongs the inevitable. No one is perfect, and striving to be is only going to stress you out. We can all do our part to ensure a better future for our descendents.
