It is National One-Hit Wonders Day!! I love one-hit wonders, they are the songs of my childhood. There the songs that I can vividly remember running around the house singing these songs. One-hit wonders are the feel-good songs that get stuck in your head. They are the songs that we hear in the background of commercials today. Today, I have a list of some of my favorites and some that we still have today in popular culture starting as the 1970s to the 2000s.
"Play that Funky Music" by Wild Cherry
I loved this song as a child. I used to wait until my mom, dad, or brothers to have company over and then I would sing the song as loud as I could. I love the song because of the catchy beat and the lyrics were pretty simple. I remember I first heard this song because my dad gave me his portable tape player and it was a mixtape that he had left in the player. I turned on the tape and the song had me sold.
"Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" by McFadden & Whitehead
I first heard this song one day it came on the radio. This is not a song that I hear a lot of today in popular culture, but it has always been one of my mom's favorite songs. I learned this song through my mom. She was always singing the lyrics and sometimes she still sings them with me.
"Love Hurts" by Nazareth
This to me is the ultimate breakup song. This song in the OG to breakup songs. It is a song that is still used in commercials and TV shows in pop culture. It is also one of those songs that everyone just seems to know.
"Funkytown" by Lipps Inc.
I can only imagine how catchy this song was in the 80s. The song is catchy to me in 2018. My family used to play this song a lot when we had cookouts at our house. It is a really easy song to get up and dance to.
"Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin
EVERYONE KNOWS THIS SONG!!! This is no of my favorite songs in general. This song is still in the mainstream and pop culture. The lyrics to this song just puts me in a good mood. It is one of those songs that as soon as you hear it you start singing and smiling.
"Our House" by Madness
We hear this song a lot in commercials. It is has a recognizable chorus and everyone knows the chorus to this song. Its always been one of my favorite songs to listen to. It reminds me of my childhood house. It was the only one that was a different color than our neighbors' houses.
"I'll Be There For You" by The Rembrandts
EVERYONE KNOWS THIS SONG TOO!!! It is the theme song to the show Friends. This song saw success because it is the theme song to Friends, but the album this song came off of struggled to gain notoriety. The show made this song popular and everyone sings this song when the show comes on.
"Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot
This is another song that I loved to sing with my family had company. It one of those songs that I know but I can live without.
"Life Is A Highway" by Tom Cochrane
I love the original and the remake of this song that Rascal Flatts did. The song is so cute and catchy. It is one of those songs that also puts me in a good mood. It is hard for me not to sing along to the song when it comes on.
"Who Let The Dogs Out" by Baha Men
This is my least favorite song in this whole list. I have been a fan of this song but it is a song that I know very well. The lyrics of this song are so mundane.
"Pieces Of Me" by Ashlee Simpson
Everyone remembers what happened to Ashlee Simpson. Before the unfortunate lipsync meltdown this was a very cute song. It is another one of those OG breakup songs. I remember when this album came out, I made my mom buy it for me at Christmas when I was 10 years old. I loved the Simpson sisters (still do).
"Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis
I loved this song when I was younger. It was one of my favorite songs and became a song that I used to compare to other songs that were similar. I thought not only the song was cute, but I thought Leona Lewis was a really good singer.
These songs have a special place in my musical history. They are songs that I learned at a young and helped me fall in love with music. There are some I like more than others, and there are some I don't like at all. But they all had an effect on me as a child.
