Trump kicks off national Native American History Month by exploiting Native Americans

After centuries of the genocide and displacement of Native Americans, November was named National Native American History Month by President Donald Trump. The same man also calls his foes Pocahontas, claims Native American reservations have fallen under mob control and testified that dark-skinned Native Americans in Connecticut were lying about their ancestry.

Trump's policies show profound disregard for Native Americans, making his proclamation of National Native American History month a desperate attempt for good press.

As soon as he was elected into office, Donald Trump made sure every policy that Barack Obama created was demolished. This includes several environmental policies, and most notably, the Affordable Care Act, or Obama-care. The expulsion of the Affordable Care Act causes more than 25 million Americans to be uninsured, and unable to pay for healthcare.

The abolishment of the Affordable Care Act would also have devastating effects on tribal communities. The United States granted Native Americans free health care in exchange for land. Completely disregarding this trade, Trump is selfishly motioning to keep the land and revoke their healthcare.

President Trump is also insistent on Building a wall between the United States and Mexico. The wall's main purpose is to stop illegal immigration into the United States and is extremely controversial. There are currently eight prototypes of the wall available to the general public online.

Trumps incentive to build a wall between Mexico and The United States also infringes on tribal territory. The wall would separate the Tohono O’odham Nation reservation into pieces, causing damage to their homes, and surrounding environment. No wonder he failed to mention Native American involvement in his most recent Columbus Day proclamation.

Trump has repeatedly disregarded Native American safety and reservation live-ability. With the approval of the Dakota Access Pipeline, Trump killed those two birds with one stone. The Dakota Access Pipeline intends to pump oil underground from North Dakota to Illinois. The pipeline, located partially on sacred burial grounds, would travel under the Missouri River, a primary water source for the Standing Rock Sioux. In the, extremely likely, event that the pipeline would burst, the Standing Rock Sioux would lose access to clean water, and their burial grounds would be compromised.

National Native American History Month is a minuscule victory for Native Americans in a long history of exploitation. President Trump thinks he can get away with torturing Native Americans by naming a month after them. To me, that's the best example of fake news.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
