A Nation United Through Destruction

"Yes, we have our own opinions and beliefs. But when we face tragedy and devastation, we face it together."

Hurricane Harvey has swept the South West, leaving people with only themselves and a few personal belongings if they were lucky. In a time of mending the destruction and trying to ease the pain of those who suffered through this time, Hurricane Irma and two other tropical storms are already heading towards the Southeastern Coast. Irma has already hit the Northern Caribbean and it's path includes the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Florida, and even the Carolinas and Georgia.

In times like this, I realize that we've never been more united as a country. In these horrific circumstances, we come together despite what political beliefs or religious views we may hold. It does not matter what race, religion, color, or sexual orientation you are because we are human beings. People all around America are helping one another.

Those in communities are checking in on neighbors and the elderly. During Hurricane Harvey, there was no second guessing when it came to going out there and helping anyone they could find. People went through sewage and contaminants to aid those who needed help.

Business owners opened up their stores to allow people to take refuge. Such as Mattress Mack, who opened his 'Gallery Furniture' to give hundreds of people a place to stay and eat. Along with churches and mosques who have opened their doors to shelter anyone in need.

People offered their boats, trucks, or cars to transport victims to safety. Amongst those volunteers, were the Cajun Navy. A group that had formed due to Hurricane Katrina, offered their aid to those in Texas by rescuing as many people as they can.

Volunteers who have come from all across America to help Texas in anyway. Whether it's saving people or distributing food and water. There have been donation centers set up for people who have donated their clothes and other items from other states.

And of course, all of those who serve our country. The Police Department, The Fire Department, The Coast Guard, and The National Guard.

It's you too, if you have donated money to the relief efforts or have donated your clothes or time to those suffering. You have had an impact and if you haven't taken part yet, you still can. The hurricanes are not over yet and we need to stay together and continue to stay strong.

If there's one thing America is known for, it's how strong and united we are when it comes to situations like this. Yes, we have our own opinions and beliefs. But when we face tragedy and devastation, we face it together. From 9/11 to Katrina, America grows stronger in spite of the horrendous events that take place.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
