Disclaimer: This article is not about a resolution. It's about a habit.
Habits, or repeated actions, are what make our resolutions come true, and our resolutions are fulfilled through individualized habits. It does happen quite often, though, that the heaviness of a new resolution or goal makes it harder to follow through with; the self-pressure sometimes counteracts our original intentions.
In that regard, having something small but powerful to be in charge of every day is like giving yourself a beautiful responsibility to nurture and take care of.
Name Your Thoughts
This little habit can be called 'Name Your Thoughts'. If we think about it, we all have some degree of understanding of how our day is going to unfold: the places we need to be, errands we need to run, tasks that need to be completed. So, naturally, we also have an idea of how we would like the day to unfold. Of course, we all know things don't always work out the way we want them to, and that's why we focus on what we can control: our thoughts and attitude.
Every day, based on what we know is going to happen, we can set one specific word that describes the most helpful attitude for that day. For example, if we need to give a presentation that day or need to have a serious conversation with someone, our word for the day can be 'calm'. If you need to be extra energetic that day, try repeating 'excited' or any other word that helps you feel that emotion. Just remember that one word and repeat it throughout the day, especially when you seem to be getting nervous or feeling the opposite of what you want to feel. I've found that this helps keep my attention in the present and I tend to feel more in control of my emotions.
This new year - whether you have a resolution or not - try this small little trick to make a big impact in your everyday life. If you have some big resolutions lined up, too, this technique will help you get there! Relax, and take this year one day at a time (or even one task at a time) to find the peace that you so deserve. <3
