The year 2016 has been a wild one in the political realm. To be honest, all the social media and news coverage of this election has been so wild it makes the 2012 Obama/Romney presidential election appear tame in comparison.
In one corner, you’ve got the political chameleon Hillary Clinton, who’d probably sell Bill to the black market for a victory. In the other corner you have Donald Trump, a successful businessman who makes lewd metaphors with his hands, has an ego taller than his buildings, and was the host of a reality TV show where musician Meatloaf and actor Gary Busey almost had a fistfight. What a dynamic duo!
I remember when my Facebook news feed used to just be memes and baby pictures; now I see so many people I know become political pundits all of a sudden and write ridiculous Facebook statuses that I just can’t get on board with (both liberal and conservative). All us normal and calm people just need to rough out the next couple of months and it’ll be 2017 and nobody will care what’s going on except for your right-wing uncle.
The world is a crazy place
I’m a firm believer in the fact that the world is an absurd place and that you need find the humor in everyday life or else you’ll go mad. This election has been a great source of humor no matter who you plan on voting for. I admire people who have passion, but I find it hilarious when people get ridiculous. That sentence is a perfect segue for my main topic: the naked Donald Trump statue that has been erected (ha!) in five cities.
If you’re someone other than Ivanka, and want to see a whole lotta Donald, then your wish has been granted! The political activist group INDECLINE has certainly made headlines with their instantly unforgettable art protest. The statue does not portray Mr. Trump in a flattering aspect, as the statue’s bulging belly, pale skin, exaggerated face and bulging veins give off a repulsive image. INDECLINE intellectualized this ridiculous statue in an official statement saying, “It is through these sculptures that we leave behind the physical and metaphorical embodiment of the ghastly soul of one of America's most infamous and reviled politicians." The statue is most certainly not a pretty sight. The statue has been removed from Manhattan's Union Square and, presumably, will be in other locations.
Political activism has always been interesting to me and this statue is no exception. It’s hilarious, but pretty much tasteless. It is proof the world is really going crazy. This election is so crazy that the dude who hosted “The Apprentice” is ridiculously close to becoming president and we’ve now all seen an artistic representation of what his naked body looks like. Is a naked statue going too far? Is it completely tasteless? Do we even care about the issues? What does this say about mankind as a whole? These are answers a simple Odyssey writer is probably not able to provide.
Additional fun stuff!
The NYC Parks Department’s official statement is pretty hilarious.
