What I did during my three days in the city of Los Angeles

My Trip to Los Angeles
Jackson Magaw

After spending a weekend in Colorado Springs with some friends, I fulfilled my longtime dream of visiting the entertainment capital of the country -- Los Angeles. To say the least, it was a remarkable experience. Los Angeles is a city full of wonders and surprises, perhaps more than I could imagine. Many sights to see, many attractions to experience, especially if you are a Hollywood fanatic like me. So what did my odyssey through the City of Angels consists of?

Following the night as I settled in my room on the top floor of the Residence Inn, I called a Lyft to Hollywood Boulevard where the streets were crowded with people in cosplay and a sound stage was stationed between the Dolby Theatre and the TCL Chinese Theatre. As people were lined up awaiting for the performance of Jimmy Kimmel Live, as I trailed through the Hollywood Walk of Fame where the gold stars of my favorite celebrities lie. Around every corner located a shop filled with souvenirs that caught my eye, but only a few that would allow my wallet to sustain.

I pulled out a phone and checked the time. I had a bus tour in twenty minutes, and that's when I begin to race to Sunset Boulevard where my bus was awaiting. Upon stepping aboard, six other passengers and I cruised through the Mulholland Drive and around the Hollywood Hills, home of the luxury homes owned by some of the biggest stars in the entertainment business. We looked into a distance where the Hollywood sign lies, on the other side rests the major film studios including Warner Bros, Paramount, Disney, and Universal to name a few.

We then stroll through the sun-soaked streets of Beverly Hills where the scenery is decorated with miles of palm trees on each side. More celebrity homes pop up, homes that make you wonder how anyone can afford, and the roads are crowded with cars cruising through the Rodeo Drive, a shopping district populated with luxury clothes stores.

The next day, following another bus tour, I take a Lyft up to the Griffith Observatory where I spent my evening checking out exhibits and learning about the cosmos of our universe. As the sun sets, the lights of downtown Los Angeles lit up in the distance, flooding the scenery of awe and wonder. I stare through the horizon and imagination as the words flow through my head " Oh LA, what a paradise".

As I got on the plane getting ready to head back home, all I could think about was what a mesmerizing experience I had while also contemplating some of the things I missed out on and hopefully will get to do during my next visit including meeting a celebrity. Overall, I can't help but be fond of my experience of getting witness the heart and soul of Los Angeles and see what makes such an amazing place.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
