My Top 5 Sports Movies
Rolling Stone

As much as I love sports, I also love some, but not all, sports movies. This list could be a lot longer, but these are my personal favorites, some more famous than others. Making this list was hard, however, these movies definitely make the cut. Don't worry, I will make sure to not leave any spoilers if anyone hasn't seen these yet!

5. He Got Game

This is a basketball movie that was released in 1998. The director was Spike Lee and it starred Denzel Washington as Jake Shuttlesworth and NBA player Ray Allen as Jesus Shuttlesworth. Jake Shuttlesworth has spent the last six years in prison after accidentally killing his wife during a domestic dispute, leaving his son, star basketball prospect Jesus Shuttlesworth to take care of himself. One day, the prison warden approaches Jake with an unusual offer: He is given a week of parole to convince Jesus to attend the governor's alma mater, with the promise of a shortened sentence if he succeeds. First of all, my favorite three point shooter, Ray Allen, is in the movie. Second, he plays a man named JESUS SHUTTLESWORTH. That is single handily the best name for a basketball player and a person ever. Please tell me a name that is better than Jesus Shuttlesworth! Also, one of my favorite actors, Denzel Washington, is in this movie. He did an amazing job, as expected. You also get to see Jake play Jesus one-on-one, which was fun to see. Every time I see Ray Allen on T.V or use him in NBA 2K, I would call him Jesus Shuttlesworth. There will be a second He got Game and hopefully Ray Allen and Denzel Washington will be in it.

4. Coach Carter

This is another basketball movie, but it is fairly newer, being released in 2005. This movie stars the talented Samuel L. Jackson as the head basketball coach, Ken Carter, and has movie star-to-be, Channing Tatum. This movie was set in 1999 when Ken Carter returns to his old high school in Richmond, California, to get the basketball team into shape. With tough rules and academic discipline, he succeeds in setting the players on a winning streak. But when their grades start to suffer, Carter locks them out of the gym and shuts down their championship season. When he is criticized by the players and their parents, he sticks to his guns, determined that they excel in class as well as on the court. I love this movie because of the Coach Carter character. He is the type of guy to make people laugh and takes no BS. When things don't look good, he is not afraid to say something or do it himself. He even cancels a basketball game because the students didn't have good grades, which sets a great example for the audience; grades matter just as much as sports. Also, the games in this movie were intense and fun to watch. Imagine if high school players had a coach like this.

3. Love & Basketball

This one is a personal favorite of one of my good friends, Destynie Summers. This movie was released in 2000. It stars Sanaa Lathan as Monica and Omar Epps as Quincy. This movie is about Monica and Quincy, who are two childhood friends who both aspire to be professional basketball players. Quincy, whose father, Zeke, plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, is a natural talent and a born leader. Monica is ferociously competitive but sometimes becomes overly emotional on the court. Over the years, the two begin to fall for each other, but their separate paths to basketball stardom threaten to pull them apart. Who wouldn't want to be in a relationship with a person that loves the game of basketball as much as you? The game of basketball means so much to Monica and Quincy and so does their relationship with each other. My favorite scene in this movie is the strip basketball game where they play one-on-one. I have always wanted to do this with my girlfriend (I'm single, so that's sadly not happening soon). This would be a perfect date movie for ballers and I highly recommend it.

2. Space Jam

Any basketball fan that was born before the year 2000 should know this movie. If not, we have some problems. Space Jam was released in 1996. It stars one of the NBA's greatest players of all-time, Michael Jordan, and one of the greatest cartoons of all times, the Looney Tunes. This movie is about when Swackhammer, an evil alien theme park owner, needs a new attraction at Moron Mountain. When his gang, the Nerdlucks, heads to Earth to kidnap Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes, Bugs challenges them to a basketball game to determine their fate. The aliens agree, but they steal the powers of NBA basketball players, including Larry Bird and Charles Barkley - so Bugs gets some help from superstar, Michael Jordan. This movie is a sports movie instant classic. I enjoyed this movie from start to finish. Sure, it's gotten some flack for being a little ridiculous, but nonetheless, it's still great! Having Michael Jordan join forces with the Looney Tunes was a great idea. Seeing the Looney Tunes play basketball was hilarious and seeing some NBA stars in this movie, besides Jordan, like Larry Bird and Charles Barkley, was also cool. They are remaking this movie with LeBron James replacing Michael Jordan I have a feeling the remake won't be as great as the original.

1. Remember the Titans

This classic football movie was released in 2000. It stars the phenomenal Denzel Washington as the head coach. In Virginia, high school football is a way of life, an institution revered, each game celebrated more lavishly than Christmas, and each playoff distinguished more grandly than any national holiday. And with such recognition, comes powerful emotions. In 1971, high school football was everything to the people of Alexandria. But when the local school board was forced to integrate an all black school with an all white school, the very foundation of football's great tradition was put to the test. This is a very powerful movie. Every time I see this movie is on T.V. I watch it and have probably seen it over 20 times. I loved all of the characters, like Gary Bertier, coach Herman Boone, Sunshine,Julius Campbell, and my favorite character Petey Jones who is played by actor Donald Faison from Scrubs. This movie will make you feel all of your emotions. I recommend every football fan to watch this movie if you haven't already.

There were also some sports movies I enjoy but didn't put on the list. Movies like Dodgeball, the Rocky series, Rudy, Hoosiers, Jerry Maguire, Friday Night Lights, Any Given Sunday, The Karate Kid, White Men Can't Jump, Major League, and Moneyball. These are a collection of movies that can make you laugh, cry, and feel inspired. I hope that after watching these movies, you can appreciate them, as well as sports, as much as I do.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
