If you haven't heard of the new Netflix show "Insatiable", I'm going to assume you have been living under a rock or you're a little on the older and more mature chapter in life. This show revolves around 17-year-old Patty Bladell and the struggle of her eating disorder. She was taunted and bullied by many people in her town for being overweight, including a homeless man who punched her and caused her to break her jaw. This injury would force Patty to change her eating habits which, as a result, caused her to lose weight. When she returns to school three months later, she obviously looked thinner and her peers started to treat her differently. Now that she lost weight, she wants revenge on all the people who bullied her.
After the release of the first trailer for this show, there was much controversy about this show such as the false depiction of what eating disorders really are like and the fat-shaming theme. I decided to give the show a watch in order to give my full opinion and determine if it really is toxic for viewers to watch.
The pilot episode really was a low point. There was no depth, the jokes were bland (and pretty vulgar) and the plot was pretty generic. I couldn't tell if this show was meant to be satirical or just poorly directed and written. For some reason, I didn't want to turn off my screen and continued to watch the whole first season.
There were moments that were very cringy, not funny or just kind of disturbing to watch and listen. There were also some scenes that were done very well that I feel many viewers can relate to. Debby Ryan's character Patty was very irritable throughout the show in my opinion. I understand she comes from a place of hurt but she was overly dramatic and annoyingly impulsive, selfish and just all around a bad person. This sends a bad message to viewers that revenge is the best option and having a mindset where acting a certain way just because you are angry.
Overall, I would recommend giving the show a watch and form your own opinion. Personally, I think there are more negatives to the show than positives but I will definitely give Season 2 to watch to see if the creators will fix the mistakes from the first season.
