My Thirteen Tapes

By now I am sure that the vast majority of people have at least heard of the Netflix Original TV show Thirteen Reasons Why. If you haven’t, this show is essentially about a girl that commits suicide and leaves tapes of her explaining the thirteen reasons she decided to take her own life. I decided this was a good means to get your opinion across, so here is what I would put on my tapes. Mine are a little different though, they say the thirteen reasons why you shouldn’t commit suicide:

1. Pain is temporary.

Every bad thing in your life will go away, it just takes time. People will forget, you will grow, and things will move on.

2. Your pets will be waiting for you to come home.

They don’t understand where you went or when you’re coming back. They’re just going to sit by the door and wait for you to come home, you don’t want to disappoint them, right?

3. It won’t solve your problems, just create more.

Someone will find your body and they’ll never be able to live the same way again. Your parents will blame themselves and people at school or work will wonder if there was anything else they could have done to change your mind.

4. You aren’t giving your future children a chance.

You could have the child that cures cancer or finds out how to end world hunger. You’re denying them the opportunity to even be born when you choose to take your own life.

5. You didn’t work as hard as you have to throw it all away.

You’ve worked so hard in life, whether it’s through your academics or work, how sad would it be if all of that was for nothing.

6. Someone out there is waiting to meet you.

You’re going to deny your soulmate meeting you and your happy future together because things seem to not be looking up right now.

7. You could save someone’s life.

You could be the one that is there to stop someone from being hit by a car or push them out of the way of a dangerous situation. Without you being there, things can go much different.

8. You’ll never be able to experience your favorite season again.

Or drink your favorite drink, hear your favorite song, talk to your favorite person, or watch your favorite show. Are you ready to give all that up?

9. You’ll miss out on all the interesting things that will happen in the future.

This could be anything from missing out on your favorite band releasing more music to the release of the first hovercraft.

10. You don’t deserve to become another statistic.

Your life is too important to be turned into another statistic or become part of another cliché.

11. To prove that you’re stronger than they think.

To want it all to end but to keep going proves to yourself and other just how strong you truly are.

12. It’s impossible to fix if you begin to regret it.

A lot of people who have attempted suicide and survive admit that they regret it once they began. If you regret it, there is a very small change you will be able to fix it and come back from that.

13. You’re letting others know that you think it’s okay to give up.

Other people around you might be going through the same thing and having the same thoughts. You committing suicide lets them know that you consider that okay and might lead them to do the same.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
