I often find myself having to defend why I chose to join a sorority in college. It seems people are always questioning my happiness and wondering how a sorority could do just about all of that. Running home to my sorority was more than a choice. It was a decision I would make all over again if given the opportunity.
The five reasons joining a sorority matters:
1. Running home to a family after having to leave your own behind.
You don’t realize it till the moment you run on the lawn and look around at the simple laughter, tears and compassion filling the scene. It doesn’t hit you until you are hugging a bunch of strangers as tears fill your eyes, realizing these people matter.
2. Feeling important.
We all have those days when we just don’t feel good enough. We all have those times when we need to be reminded how important we truly are and having 300 plus sisters that let you know your worth is more than a phone call home could ever do.
3. Empowering one another.
Everyone in a sorority is so unique in their own way. Some are more driven, some more are creative, and some are more confident. Every girl you surround yourself with empowers you in a magnitude of ways to be the best version of yourself. What we lack, we gain from knowing one another.
4. Gaining friendships.
It is easy to make friends wherever you go, but by joining a sorority, you gain more than just friendships. You gain a sisterhood filled with girls you can lean on, laugh with and some day call your bridesmaids. It sounds cliché, and it is, but it is so true.
5. Life after college.
College is just four years, but a sorority is more than that. It is forever. The day you initiate becomes the day you identify yourself with something bigger than you could even come to know. Sisterhood isn’t just fun and friends for the time being. It’s people in your life that celebrate all of life’s journey with you , not just the thrill of your college years.
