On Friday night, members of ISIS conducted a series of heinous attacks on innocent people at six different locations in Paris, France. Over 150 people have been confirmed dead, and countless others were injured by the bombs, the gunfire, and the resulting panic.
But we've all seen the news. We've all heard about what happened and how the President of France, Francois Hollande, has vowed to avenge all of the death and despair caused by the gruesome massacre.
I don't want to give you more statistics. I don't want to talk about the state of emergency or the people who have been displaced by the tragedy.
Because the statistics don't help me to understand the lack of humanity shown by these attackers. The news articles won't explain to me how anyone could kill innocent people and feel nothing but righteousness. Or how they can look into the eyes of someone who simply had the misfortune of being in a certain place, and take their lives without ever feeling the repercussions reverberate around them.
Because each of those people that were killed had loved ones. They had families and friends and lives that were cut short by cowardly, violent people. People who believe that killing faultless people somehow glorifies them. The people who have not been shy about their cruelty, who are always posting new videos of beheadings and other acts of terror. The people who bring me to my point.
What I want to say to anyone who cares to read this, but especially to the people of France, and all people who have been affected by this horrifying show of brutality, is that those people who have hurt you and your loved ones so terribly cannot win if you refuse to give in to their brand of hatred.
The members of ISIS who committed and support this terrorism are consumed by hate, and they act out their hatred by killing, torturing, and destroying. But on a large scale, you and we who stand with you are better than all of that. We are above all of that. Because in response to their hate, we will give love.
There will be revenge and consequences for those who have committed such atrocities. As there should be. But for you innocent people who have been attacked, we send love.
We send love in the form of letters, articles, posts, and prayers for your strength and for your safety. We stand with you in this time of terrible grief and fear, and our hearts are with you. Because we know how it feels to be a country wounded, and we will not let your pain go unacknowledged.
We mourn with you, we fear for you, and we pray for you. But in the largest way, we hope that you will find peace in the knowledge that we as an international people will join you in never forgetting, in the hope that you will remember that you are never alone.
