My Grandma, My Hero

I'll never be able to thank her enough, but I'll do my best.

Merriam Webster defines "hero" as a person admired for noble qualities, one who shows great courage.

I define the word hero with a single word.

Grandma.

My grandma has been by my side through everything my entire life. When I say everything, I mean it. Every dance recital, every homecoming, every prom, and every single school event. She refused to miss a second.

The amount of support I have received from this woman is endless. I can't think of a single time she didn't have my back.

There's a saying, "it takes a village to raise a child," and I hold it very close to my heart because of my grandma. I was raised by a single mom, and my grandma was by her side every step of the way.

When my mom went to work, I went to grandma's. My grandma dropped me off and picked me up at school almost every single day until I could drive, and took me to every single dance class.

My grandma has always been my mom and I's backbone. Whenever we need something, she does whatever she has to do to make it happen. She is easily the most selfless person I have ever met. She will sacrifice anything for our family.

Almost everyone I know knows who my grandma is, and she is pretty much known as "Katie's Grandma" to everyone. She has a pretty big reputation for being the one bringing me everything I forget, bringing me lunch "just because," and anything else I could ever ask for.

It's probably pretty safe to say I have the coolest grandma ever. I mean... who else can play "What Do You Meme" with their mom AND grandma and laugh so hard your stomach hurts?

I know I don't thank my grandma nearly enough for everything she does for me, and I will never be able to express how grateful I am for her.

So, thank you, Grandma.

For your endless support.

For getting me everywhere I need to be.

For giving your family everything they could ever need or want.

And for being the most badass grandma out there.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
