20 is such a weird age to be. You're too old for this, too young for that, so it's hard to figure what you should be doing and how you should be acting. For example, I can vote, and get tattoos, but I can't rent a car or buy alcohol. You're two years past the age where you're considered an adult, but you don't know how to adult. Some people look 20 while other people still look 12. When people you know are expecting a child, you don't know if you should freak out or congratulate them.

Being 20 means you can't blame the things you do on teenage angst or rebellion. It means you gain a new sense of accountability and responsibility. It means more people are likely to look up to you because you're entering the age where your life should be together. But sometimes, everything isn't always together and that's okay. We're at the age where we're still learning and figuring things out. With that being said, I present to you 20 things I've learned in 20 years.

1. Everything happens for a reason.

Even if you don't know the reason now, you will soon enough.

2. Speaking things into existence works.

This year I told myself I was going to go to my dream school, get a new laptop, and get a new car; and guess what? I've accomplished all of these things. Just put it out into the universe and be prepared to work for it and you'll eventually get there.

3. If you want something, you have to work for it.

There's going to be little to no handouts in life, so the satisfaction of earning it makes whatever you get that much more rewarding.

4. Going out isn't all the hype it is on social media.

You take the one good picture for your Instagram and your Snapchat story and that's sometimes as good as it gets. From personal experience, I can say that every time I've gone out, some type of drama has happened in some way shape or form.

5. You can say no.

Don't do things because you feel obligated to. It's easier said than done, but if you don't want to do something, say no.

6. The best thing you can do for yourself is leave bad situations.

Staying in a toxic situation is one of the worst things you can do to yourself. It's mentally, physically, and emotionally draining. This can go for friendships, relationships, and jobs.

7. You need to listen to your body.

If you're busy all the time like I am, it's easy for you to get sick or burnt out. When you start feeling like this, you need to take a break.

8. Take the time to remind the people that you care about that you love them.

Life is short and crazy, you never know what's going to happen. You don't want something to happen to someone you care about without letting them know you love them.

9. You should also take the time to let those people know that you appreciate them.

Appreciation is one of the best things you can give to somebody.

10. You're not going to get along with everyone.

You're not going to like people and people aren't going to like you. Once you realize this, you can spend less time focusing on all that bad energy tension causes.

11. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

This can go for things you don't understand, or for your health. If you're struggling, get the help you need.

12. There's life outside your comfort zone and it's usually better.

Sure it's easier to live life in your own little bubble, but I promise you'll have more fun outside of it.

13. Your parents are always right.

All the things they told you when you were younger are starting to ring true.

14. It's time to start thinking long-term.

Yes we're young, but we also need to think about the future. We need to start thinking about what we want out of life and what we don't want out of life.

15. Don't strive to be like someone else, strive to the best version of yourself.

We all compare ourselves to other people, and that's no fun. At the end of the day, you'll be more happy being yourself than you will be pretending to be someone else.

16. Change is all apart of your personal growth.

Chances are you're not the same person you were in high school, or even the same person you were yesterday and that's completely okay. People who don't understand your improvement will say that you've changed.

17. Use a planner.

I have no shame in admitting I use a planner. I use it for due dates, article deadlines, days I work, days my bills are due, and days I have events. Organization is key!!

18. It's okay to change your major.

I'm personally on my third major, but I know Social Work is the one I want to be in. So maybe you need to take a few extra classes, maybe you'll be a semester behind graduating; but as long as you're happy, that's all that matters.

19. Stand up for what you believe in.

If something is bothering you, say something. What's right is not always what's popular and that's okay.

20. STAY POSITIVE.

Things are going to get tough. You're going to want to quit, but staying positive is the best thing you can do. Positive minds, positive vibes, positive life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
