My First Week Of College
Catawba College

As my first week of college wraps up, I am starting to realize that some of the horror stories that all of us freshman have heard are true and some of them are just exaggerations. You are indeed by yourself and it is up to you to get the things you need to get done, done. The classes aren't long but they provide plenty of work that will take time to do. There is no scheduled time to for your lunch break. You have to figure out when your going to eat your meals, do your own laundry, study, etc.

My college experience is probably a lot different than others due to the fact that my roommate is blind, and because of this there is a bathroom in my room along with a separate room with a washing machine and a dryer. Hearing the stories from the other freshman about fighting for a shower or having their clothes pulled out of the washer and dryer mid cycle are terrifying and I don't know if I would be able it.

I did not know what to expect from my roommate, but I have been pleasantly surprised. I thought I was going to have to help him out a lot but he has managed to get around the room with no help at all really. The first night I told him where everything was and I didn't have to help him out much at all after that. Despite his disability he is able to play. Sometimes I just see some of the things he is able to do and I'm just amazed. Whenever he needs something he doesn't bother to ask for help, he just does it himself. He even somehow fixed the toilet in our room. "I had to pee, so I just started moving stuff around and it worked," is what he told me when I got back to the dorm.

I am surprised by how fast I have been able to make friends, because I am not the most sociable person in the world, but as everyone knows, college is the place for new things so I just put myself out there and I have met a pretty diverse group of people. Hopefully I have some new life long friends.

All of my classes for the first are only 50 minutes long but I already have plenty of assignments to complete. I knew the work was going to be harder, but I didn't think that I would walk into my NC history class and the professor would start talking about a project on the Andy Griffith show. Every class has given me a syllabus full of assignments with due dates and they might not ever say anything about them and I'm just going to be expected to have them done. I know I'm going to pass everything, but with how high of a grade?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
