kjndfihretgoyvfoinjg!!!! I have nothing better to articulate my feelings as I write this article. As I'm writing, it's been only a couple days since attending my first true Broadway musical, and I'm still not over it, and I don't think I will be for quite some time. I went from listening to the songs once or twice to now playing the entire soundtrack on constant repeat. I'm dancing around all over the place, and my singing is now constant.
This past Sunday, I went from Philly to New York City with my boyfriend and his family for a somewhat impromptu adventure. It was my first time in recent memory that I've been to New York, and that was, in and of itself, an adventure. We explored throughout the afternoon then capped the night off by going to see "Waitress" at Brooks Atkinson Theatre smack in the heart of Times Square, and I still have no words better to describe it than the random smashing of keys above and "wow".
As I mentioned, I wasn't super familiar with the musical, but I had heard good things from my theatre friends, so I had high hopes. As was to be expected, the show far exceeded my exceptions. Most of the performance, I was laughing my butt off, crying, or making sarcastic commentary. The characters were realistic and the actors and actresses portraying them had unparalleled talent, both acting and singing wise.
Musical theatre is already difficult enough, but when you move it to a level like that of Broadway, the stakes are that much higher. There were a couple understudies playing, and you would have never guessed because they kept pace with the regulars, and, especially in the case of Becky, still managed to deliver show-stopping lines.
All in all it was a life changing experience for the theatre geek in me, and it's a good thing I'm a few hours away from Broadway because if I was closer, I would be at risk of seeing a show each night, and I don't think my bank account could handle it. If you ever get the chance to see a show on Broadway, even if you're not a theatre enthusiast, do it. It was an amazing experience and a check off my bucket list.
