This year the holidays look a little different than they have in the past; but, that doesn't make your holiday traditions any less important. Personally, I always look forward to participating in my families traditions every year because I think it makes it unique. Even though they might not look entirely the same this year, I still am excited to participate in them a little differently this year. So in honor of the holidays I wanted to share my five favorite family Christmas traditions.
1. Baking Christmas cookies
I think this is a tradition that a lot of families have but on Christmas Eve my family bakes cookies to leave out for Santa. Over the years, we've generally stuck to the simple chocolate chip or M&M cookies; however, last year we frosted different sugar cookies.
2. Giving Santa anything but milk
Over the years, my family has stepped away from giving Santa milk. My parents started doing this by telling my sister and I that everyone else gave him milk so we should give him something else. At first it started with leaving him Diet Mountain Dew but as we grew up we expanded the options. For example, last year we left him a White Claw.
3. Eating pizza on Christmas Eve
I'm really not sure how this tradition got started but it's stuck. Now on every Christmas Eve, the adults enjoy not having to deal with cooking and the kids enjoy an excuse to have pizza.
4. Watching The Polar Express on Christmas Eve
Honestly, this is my favorite tradition. Over the years, my siblings have lost interest in watching The Polar Express; however, I don't let that stop me.
5. A mildly-inappropriate story from our grandparents
Out of all our traditions, this is definitely the most unique to our family. So for the last several years, I can remember my great-grandmother telling a random mildly-inappropriate story sometime though out the day. Unfortunately, it often came with dinner but either way I loved it. Over the years, I have turned this into a tradition. While this tradition has been the most affected by COVID, it'll still happen. It'll just be virtually.
