Yes, I have killed. I have killed multiple times, and I will proudly continue to do so. My guess is if you're reading this, you have killed too. As a millennial, your hands are red with the blood of a thousand industries, and baby boomers are making sure we are being held accountable for the stab wounds inflicted on their generation's products. They want to bring us to trial, and I am here standing with my blood-stained hands up saying "Come and get me." I am a murderer, and I will not apologize for that.
My mindful eating is killing Applebee's. I don't want to spend money on a meal I could easily cook at home. If I am in a time-crunch, I will get fast food, and if I have time (and the money) to spare, I want my dinner to be an experience. Family-style restaurants only offer food I could easily make at home. Yes, that's right; I am cooking as well. I practice mindful eating because I care about my health. I know I will likely live past 80, and I would prefer not to be senile. I refuse to feel bad about not wanting to be broke, obese, and miserable.
My local shopping is killing Walmart. I prefer to shop locally when I can. I want to know where my food and clothing is coming from. As a conscious shopper, I don't want my purchases to contribute to unethical business practices. My money shouldn't go towards products made by the hands of children in sweat shops. I make conscious decisions in regards to my purchases, and that means researching what I buy and being choosy about where I buy it. I also know the importance of helping local store owners support their families and that buying local can cause a ripple effect positively changing the economy and the world.
My education is killing the housing market. My student debt is an albatross around my neck, strung by the people who criticize its effects. Education is valuable and necessary in today's workforce. That education, however, does not cost the same as when baby boomers were in school. The effect of that is the crippling debt millennials are faced with. No, Bill, I can't buy a house like you could when you were my age, and I won't apologize for that. Hopefully one day I will be able to afford a purchase that steep, but today is not that day, and that's okay. My education afforded me my career, so I'm going to focus on that until my career can afford me a mortgage.
My critical thinking is killing religion. In an age of constant information, I have learned to question everything. Researching for evidence is second nature and fact checking is habitual. In a world where fake news is expected, one has to be able to weed through the garbage and find the truth. That is why I can't believe in religion. However, just because I don't need religion, it doesn't mean I'm not a good person. I have my own morals and values, and I don't need to be afraid of some mystical being in order to do the right thing.
Millennials are not mindlessly murdering markets; we are making thoughtful decisions and creating a better future for ourselves. By killing what baby boomers have created, we are allowing better ideas to live. You have to pluck weeds for the flowers to grow. With the weeds gone, communities will flourish, kids will play, and the world will go on. Hopefully, the world we create will go on to be better and brighter than it was before. The millennial generation is a generation that strives for quality, not quantity. We yearn for clean air, good health, world peace, and beautiful experiences. If that makes me a killer, then so be it. I will gladly own up to that title.
My blood-stained hands are in the air; take me to trial, and I will admit to being guilty, but guilt-free. I have killed and will continue to kill, hands red and unapologetic.
