There is a longstanding tradition that many people partake in, where at the end of every year, they make New Years resolutions. This is where people lie to themselves about how they’re going to do so many things differently in the upcoming year, like traveling more, working harder, being more outgoing, and other commitments such as these, most of which are usually abandoned sometime in January. MTV News recently capitalized on this tradition, but with a racist twist.
Earlier this week on December 19th, MTV released a classless, racist and condescending video directed at white men. The title of the video was “New Years Resolutions for White Guys”. The format involved an assortment of people simultaneously talking to the white male viewers, giving them tips on how to improve their behavior for the upcoming New Year. The video was as condescending and racist as it sounds. Some of the suggestions included asking white men to recognize mansplaining, which is when a man explains something in a condescending way (which is ironic) and then to stop doing it. The video also asked that white people recognize that America was never great for anyone who wasn’t a white guy, except for the black President and a long list of accomplished minority entrepreneurs, artists, celebrities and politicians. MTV News took down the video from their Youtube page after an overwhelmingly negative response.
This kind of rhetoric is exactly the sort of thing that encourages racial tensions, and racism directed against white people is one of the few forms of racism that is considered socially acceptable. When you denigrate an entire group of people based on their race, you are furthering divisiveness and hate. If you are someone who is against racism and finds it deplorable, then this video should probably be disgusting to you. If you are someone who is against racism and finds it deplorable, but you found nothing wrong with this video and thought that MTV News made valid points, then you should consider the possibility that you are a hypocrite.
