Moving On And Moving In

The reality of packing up your life.

Moving On And Moving In

Well, it has finally happened. Summer has come to an immediate close all of a sudden. It came and went within a blink of an eye. Your younger siblings are back into the full daily grind of school and sports. All of your friends begin to leave to their different college towns every other day. And then it hits ya straight in the face: "I gotta pack." Those three simple words are tough to swallow. Initially it doesn't seem like it'll be that bad. You think, "Oh, I won't take as much this year!" or "I didn't ever completely unpacked, so it'll be easier." Both these thoughts are oh so very wrong.

Hoarding. "Hi, my name is Emily Grace and I am a clothes hoarder." **Hoarding Alliance responds with a hardy hello** But really, going through my clothes, I learned that I am a complete hoarder. I have shirts and bottoms that I bought in seventh grade. Why I think I need to keep items that I have not touched in years is besides me. So, I finally bit the bullet and sorted my clothes into toss and donate piles. Packing did help me eliminate old things I needed to part with long ago.

Condensing. How many tank tops does one need while at school? How many running shorts does one take? How many pairs of socks? The list is endless, but you have to consider just about every clothing item how many of it you want to take. Or how many clothes can you stuff into a couple suitcases. Or how often you are willing to do laundry.

Excitement. The entire week prior to the actual moving day, you're completely restless. No matter how tired packing makes you, once your head hits the pillow you cannot stop imaging yourself on campus again and FINALLY seeing all of your best friends.

Emotional. You start to realize, no matter how pumped you are to go back to school and be with all of your peeps, you will miss being at home with your family. Your mom starts to get sad about you leaving again; not as bad as freshmen year though, she is just sad to see you go AGAIN. Because obviously your siblings are not nearly as bomb as you, so of course your parents are upset the best kid is packing up the car to move out again (lol).

All in all, packing is a big headache and a workout. But, when it is all said and done, when you pull out of your drive way with your Jeep fully loaded of necessities it truly sinks in - you're going to your happy place. You're sad to hug your fam goodbye, but you'll be back in due time. And in a quick trip down 231, you arrive in beautiful Greencastle, Indiana, and you are beyond happy.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
