Shield your eyes: 'Black Christmas' and 'The Invisible Man'

These trailers did an injustice to their movies, and I want to share why.

Shield your eyes: 'Black Christmas' and 'The Invisible Man'
When audiences are pelted with key plot points, settings, and characters while watching a movie trailer, it's got to be one of the biggest letdowns in entertainment and should be criticized more often. Productions that look so appealing, with A-list actors and concepts that invite viewers to new scenarios are at times marketed very poorly in their previews. My roommate and I enjoy horror movies, and we were excited about the announcement of another "Black Christmas" remake named after the original 1974 holiday situated slasher. Then we watched the trailer. Spoiler alert?

To say the least, I'm very reluctant to spend my time on a movie with an official trailer that paves the way for anyone to conclude who the killer is, what group they're a part of, and why they are killing. That's the premise of a slasher film, why a killer is killing, and which characters survive at the end to find out. We may not know who will live out of the final squad of sisters shown, but it's very likely their holiday spirit, and people's interest in this film, have both been slain. It won't matter because viewers saw the characters find out who is killing them and then prepare to brawl.

Unfortunately, I have more examples. Here is another upcoming film from Universal Pictures. For anyone excited for "The Invisible Man" starring Elizabeth Moss, don't worry I have the entire movie here for you. Spoiler alert.

So you're telling me that I was supposed to be surprised that the man is invisible in "The Invisible Man" and not actually dead? Who would have thought? Maybe me, if I had skipped this trailer. It's a shame this trailer has made the structure of the plot so obvious, because we for sure know he or someone is invisible and stalking her. Elizabeth Moss's character claims she isn't crazy, and next thing we know she's in a psychiatric ward and it's shown that her suspicions were somewhat true!

Although I just reasoned why these trailers were poorly executed, it doesn't mean I won't take part in a theater experience and watch these movies for my own entertainment. I look forward to reviewing these both, and trust even if plot points are exposed, great filmmaking and storytelling may take place.

While trailers and advertisements before movies are surely passable, skipping them is not something many do out of choice. In 2018 I made the decision to avoid all trailers when I went to see a movie, either through volunteering to get popcorn, closing my eyes and covering my ears, or simply planning the time I walked in real close to the actual start time. However, I don't think I would subject myself to that media isolation again. I enjoy the anticipation too much, and instead only turn away from a trailer if it gives away to much. Or if it's an Avenger's movie.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
