I recently went and saw the new movie "IT," based on Stephen King's novel of the same name. I have to say, it lived up to my expectations and more. It's been doing well at the box office, selling out multiple times. I even went and saw it late on a Tuesday night and it was still busy.
Before I get too much into what I thought of the movie, I do have to admit, I have not read the book and only saw bits and pieces of the original movie. I did do some research though so I will compare with what I've learned.
Not too long ago I wrote an article about how I'm not the biggest fan of horror movies, which you can find here. Now, that still stands, as most don't grasp my attention. However, with this movie, once I saw the trailer I knew I had to give it a shot. There was so much hype around it and I heard nothing but good things, so I looked forward to seeing it.
The movie was quite remarkable. Obviously, it had its classic jump scares, but I didn't mind them. Plus, the overall movie still had this suspenseful feeling to it, so it wasn't relying on the jump scares to make it good. It had all the right parts to make it a classic horror movie. It had a well-written script, followed by fantastic directors, actors, and effects. Everything worked well together and I was very impressed, especially with the kids. I thought they were great actors.
I recently watched an interview with Bill Skarsgård where he talked about the movie and what it was like working with the kids. He mentioned how professional they were. He also shared how the kids were kept away from him, not letting them see him as Pennywise.
In fact, their first glimpse wasn't until filming the projector scene where he shows up in quick clips. The first real time seeing him was the scene in the well house when he charges at Eddie. He's screaming in his face, drooling, etc. As expected, the character is crying and shaking, so Bill was worried he was actually scaring the child, but when the director yelled "cut" the child told him he loved what he was doing with the character. You can watch the interview here.
I highly suggest watching a video by FoundFlix, which breaks down the movie and explains things. It gives you a lot of information and really helped me out. You can find the video here. The other video I recommend watching on the same channel is the character breakdown. It dives into what "IT" is exactly and all the information you need to know, which you can find here. There are obviously spoilers in these videos, so if you haven't seen the movie and don't want anything ruined, don't watch them until after.
Overall I was very impressed with this movie and will certainly be going out to buy it when it becomes available. So here's to Stephen King for another wonderful book, which in turn gave us an awesome movie.
What did you think of the movie?
