Sororities Are More Than Just Letters

Being open-minded about sororities just might change your life.

Sororities Are More Than Just Letters
Nicole Cantore

Up until a year and a half ago, I never had the intention of ever joining a sorority. All I knew about them was what I saw in the movies, and to be completely honest, I wasn't too impressed. I didn't think I was the "sorority type" and went into college with the plan to just go through and see what happens. However, halfway through my freshman year, that plan changed. I decided that I would sign up for recruitment and give a sorority a chance.

Now, a year after going through recruitment, I can truly say that joining a sorority was the best decision I've ever made. It has changed my life in more ways that I can count, but here are just a few of those reasons.

1. You grow up and find out who you are.

Joining a sorority does something special to you. It helps you discover who you truly are and what you want in your life. College is a time of self-discovery and growth. Being surrounded by other motivated women is the perfect environment to grow and evolve.

2. You will go outside your comfort zone.

Going through recruitment and the new member process push you out of your comfort zone. Now at first this is a little scary, but I promise you, it will help you feel so much more comfortable in your own skin!

3. You're surrounded by women who will motivate you to be better.

Having over 100 sisters, all with different dreams and goals, it makes you want to achieve your own dreams. Plus, you always have sisters there to cheer you on and give you advice!

4. You will feel more confident in yourself.

Confidence has always been something that I've struggled with. But going through recruitment has shown me that I have worth and that there are people who will love me and value me.

5. You always have something to do.

The great thing about joining a sorority is that there is always something for you to do. Whether it's a social, grab-a-date or simply going to get ice cream, there's always a sister to have a good time with.

6. You can be yourself without worrying about being judged.

We all have moments when we feel self-conscience and as if we cannot be ourselves. I don't know about you but I have always longed for friends who I could truly be myself around. Your sisters are the perfect people for that! You can act silly and weird and laugh until you cry!

7. You meet friends who will last a lifetime.

Becoming sisters is an instant connection to someone. These are the girls who will be there for you through all the ups and downs of life, who will be your bridesmaids, who will have your back no matter what.

I encourage everyone to at least be open-minded about sororities. There is much more than meets the eye. Maybe it can change your life the way it changed mine.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
