Monday really is the best day of the week.
Yes, I just heard you groan or laugh or gasp because you think I’m insane. Let me explain: having a Monday through Friday work schedule, means most people will live for Fridays. It's the final day before the weekend, before walking out of the office and sinking into the couch.
Fridays are slow. People are dragging because it’s almost the weekend. It’s so close they can almost taste the glass of wine or beer waiting for them. They’re dreaming of sleeping in and not answering emails or phone calls about project X or memo Y. They’re grumpy about that meeting that was scheduled for 3 p.m. Or, they’re grumpy about that meeting from yesterday that went on far too long.
Tuesdays are great until you realize it’s Tuesday, not Thursday.
Wednesdays only remind you that you’re only halfway through.
Thursdays are just ‘almost Fridays.’ Same feelings, just a day sooner. ‘Only one more day,’ you say to yourself on repeat.
Now let’s think about Mondays.
There is no better feeling than waking up on a Monday morning, grabbing a giant cup of coffee and relaxing as the caffeine wakes you up. Then you sit down, write your to-do list and get to work.
Mondays are always busy –you’re catching up on emails, sitting in meetings, finishing that project whose deadline is quickly approaching– you’ve got a to-do list a mile long. And, you know the only way out is through. So you grab that coffee and you’re productive.
You have plenty to do and there isn’t time to daydream about ski slopes or beaches or being anywhere but where you are. You just have the time to focus on your work. You have a long list of things to get done so you have to sit and get started. It’s busy and you don’t have time to linger at the water-cooler talking to Joel from accounting about Excel art or compare how many miles you each have run this month.
Here’s a hint though: you can live and work each day as if it’s Monday. Treat each day just as a singular day and stop dreading or judging it based on how close it is to the weekend. It’s easy to get caught up in what feels like an endless cycle of Mondays through Fridays and glorious weekends. But each day is a new chance to get things done, to have fun, and to enjoy the life you’ve been given.
So live for every day. If your favorite day is Friday and you dread Mondays, try to go into the next Monday with the same attitude as Friday.
Yes, it’s cliche, but everyday is a new day: live for it.
