Embarrassing moments. We’ve all had them. That feeling you get when your stomach begins to turn, your eyes dart around the room to view everyone’s reaction and you feel your face turn into a deep shade of red. It’s a familiar feeling to us all. And to those who say they “never get embarrassed,” yes you do.

As we grow older, we begin to grow a thicker skin. Things that would have completely devastated us when we were fourteen don’t seem like such a big deal anymore.

Looking back on adolescence, there were many moments my friends and I experienced that made us feel like our life was over. Here are a few moments they may have temporarily ended your life too.

1. When Your Parents Embarrass You in Front of Classmates

We all know how this goes. Say there is an event going on with your school where parents and students are welcome. Maybe your parents say something out loud (that nowadays you would think is hilarious) but back then you thought was humiliating. Here’s an example: one time in grade school we had this history fair going on, where classrooms presented history projects and parents came to watch. This one guy at my school was dressed as Sacagawea, and my Dad went up to him and said, “Sacagawea must have been hot,” or something goofy like that. The guy dressed as Sacagawea absolutely cracked up. I was mortified because it was an older guy from school and that line brought attention to me. Today, I would have almost peed my pants at that because my Dad is one of the funniest guys I know. Parents, if your kids get embarrassed, please don’t get offended. It happens to every kid when they’re in the stage of caring so heavily about what people think.

2. When Your Phone Gets Taken Away

In my baby years, my phone was my life (and partially still is). It was my window to the great wide world. It was the easiest way to stay connected and be in the know without actually having to socialize too much. But when I talked back to my parents, you best believe I got my phone snatched out of my hands. Back then, it felt like they pulled the plug on me. What if I missed a hilarious conversation with my group chat? What if my crush texted me in the day it was gone but lost interest after I didn’t text back for a certain amount of time? What if everyone forgot who I was because I didn’t tweet or update my status? In the present day, I still am attached to my phone but there are definitely times where I don’t care to check it for a few hours because there’s no point. Every snap or Instagram like you get will still be waiting there when you look at it later.

3. Your First Car Accident

Uh-oh. So you just turned sixteen. You feel the freedom as you roll down your windows and play songs that you would feel too uncomfortable to play around your parents. The open road is ahead of you, so many places to go within reason. You’re so distracted by this new found freedom, that you get carried away and end up in your first fender bender. “Oh my God, my parents are going to KILL me! I’ll never experience the freedom of the open road again.” Calm down, young traveler. Everyone has been in slight accidents before, even the parents that are going to “kill” you. Don’t sweat it, and learn from your mistakes. Accidents happen all the time.

4. Forgetting that “Time of the Month”

You’re feeling slightly off this week, and you can’t tell why. You decide to wear your cute, white shorts to school. When all of the sudden, you go to the bathroom and see your monthly visitor has arrived a little early. Your visitor has also decided to make an appearance on your new shorts. Might as well stay in the bathroom and never come out, right? Girl, everything will be okay. It’s a natural thing and nothing to be embarrassed about. Also, check out the “embarrassing moments” section in every preteen magazine made. It’s a reminder that you are not alone in this situation.

5. When You Slip up in Front of the Class

Everyone has that one teacher in life that calls on them during the worst possible time. They call on you during that moment when you’re completely zoned out, thinking about your weekend plans or how you’d rather be anywhere else but here. Then, your teacher says your name and everyone looks at you. They ask you a question that sounds like a foreign language to you. You have to completely bullshit this answer with confidence. I went with the “I don’t know” answer quite often. You know you’re wrong, but once your teacher tells you that you’ve messed up everything goes to shit. You hear that voice in your head saying “How embarrassing, everyone thinks I’m stupid. I’m an absolute failure, everyone will remember this moment for the rest of their lives.” Truth is, half of the class probably wasn’t listening anyway. Throughout my elementary and high school years, I learned that everyone gives a wrong answer at one point and NO ONE CARES. Relax, you’re not a failure because you got that one algebra question wrong.

6. When Your Crush Figures out You like Them But They Don’t Feel the Same

Oh man. This one was always the real killer. Somehow, someway, one of your friends would spill the beans about the one you’ve got the butterflies for. Slowly but surely, the news would spread to the one person you want to keep it from the most: your crush. You think, “Maybe if he likes me we can get together this weekend and have a date at the mall and split a pretzel from the food court.” However, your crush wants nothing to do with you. He starts avoiding you and refuses to talk to you. And you’re so embarrassed because now everyone is making jokes about how you two are in some damn tree “K-I-S-S-I-N-G.” Don’t worry love bug. Everyone will forget about this in a week or so. As far as your crush not liking you back for God knows why screw him because you aged well.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
