Mental health is and has always been a fairly precarious subject.
Let's go cliff jumping.
I've grown up with fairly poor mental health. I've been bullied, had anxiety and depression issues, and some pretty bad social issues as well. Some of you already know this, but to those who don't, I'm not ashamed. Here, I'll tell you why.
MENTAL HEALTH IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF.
For years I suffered from terrible self esteem issues because of my social ineptitude, always thinking I was somehow different from everyone else. The truth is, however, we're all human. There are things about us that make us different, but that's all a part of being human. We are defined by our differences from one another be it diseases, mental disorders, talents, personalities, or what have you. For better or for worse, there are things about all of us that we keep hidden, but they still make us who we are.
It's completely up to you whether you're ashamed of yourself or just don't want to tell people something. Yes, there are things that not everyone needs to know. But for some a public declaration can help. When I'm sitting in my room by myself because I don't have the energy to leave, sometimes a kind word can go a long way. there are certain things that people with mental health disorders would like you to understand. So listen.
Don't accept the common stereotypes of disorders like these. Let someone who actually suffers from them explain themselves. Don't assume that you understand what we are going through, you really don't understand.
I understand this may be quite general, but the most important thing to take out of this that can be applied to whatever disorder you may be dealing with is to have those around you listen. Tell them what you need that will help you. If they oblige they are people to keep around you. Those who understand rather than ignore are the people you want to surround yourself with. If they are willing to alter their behavior for your good, then they possess true compassion.
Surround yourself with good people and realize everyone is different. Have faith in yourself and be strong with your convictions. If you need something, say it. It's better for you to say something than suffer in silence.
Thank you
