TV shows and movies have been such a large part of society. We see commercials and movie trailers on every billboard or corner of the internet. They are so ingrained into our daily life, it is no wonder that we often see references to our own culture or to other works mingled within plots and scripts. Certain characters may read books about a certain wizarding world or other characters may play a video game where you battle using little monsters. These references not only give us something exciting to notice, they also define what our society considers important enough to remember.
However despite this love for references, it would seem our society has a problem when shows or movies use a copious amount of modern references. Though we do enjoy the occasional nod towards something in our common culture, there comes a point where enough is simply enough. For example, a small nod towards pop culture is perfectly fine, but an entire motion picture that centers on walking and talking emojis is entirely too much. Similarly, it also is too much to see a thing such as twerking in "The Powerpuff Girls."
Why are modern references this way? Why do we hate to see our media filled with many references to our modern society?
In my opinion, I think that if a show has too many pop culture references, it runs the risk of becoming to oversaturated with time. Essentially, the more modern references a show or movie has, the easier it is to date that movie. A reference to emojis allows future audiences to quickly date the piece of entertainment it is from. For me, I believe that is the exact problem. The quicker you are to date something, the quicker you are able to disassociate from it. References can be fickle things, if you understand them, you are not taken out of the world as quickly, but if you don't understand them, you can get completely lost.
And there lies the heart of the issue. When we watch movies or shows, we want to get lost in the world they create. With too many pop cultural references within the movie or show, we get sucked right out of magic. Similarly, if you don't get the reference, you can get lost within the world you were meant to be lost in.
Overall, we like things to be timeless. When shows or movies are not heavily touched by the modern references that call back to our society, they become more and more relatable to people who watch.
