A modern adaption of the childhood tale, for adults!

Hansel and Gretel was never a favorite of mine, but I saw a lot of potential for a modern adaption. I never liked how in the original the stepmother was evil and hated the children, nor how the father let her manipulate him into giving up his children. Another reason I didn't like it was, obviously, the cannibalistic witch who two children wind up burning alive... I mean come on.

So I made a few changes to it and changed the moral of the story. It's now more directed to an older audience. Hope you enjoy my modern rendition of the Brothers Grimm Hansel and Gretel!

Hannah and Greg

Once there lived two siblings, twins, named Hannah and Greg. The two were both in college and had been for three years, but neither had decided a major or minor. They still lived with their loving parents and were in no hurry to change that.

Their parents however were starting to get annoyed with their children.

"They must leave," the mother said to the father one night as they prepared for bed "they eat our food, don't clean up, and both refuse to get jobs. It's about time the both of them grew up,"

"I agree," the father said with a sigh "We've paid for three years of their college and neither has shown any thanks or progress. The money in their college fund is starting to run low, they better decide soon or they'll be on their own."

The mother nodded "and we certainly aren't letting them live here forever." she shook her head as she crawled into bed "I have an idea," she smiled "we'll make them an appointment with an adviser tomorrow afternoon then leave them without them knowing."

"Then they'll have to figure things out for themselves for once in their lives," the father nodded in agreement. After they agreed, they went to bed.

Little did they know Hannah and Greg overheard the whole conversation.

"What are we going to do?" Greg asked whilst biting his lip nervously.

"Don't worry we'll figure something out," she nodded reassuringly. Then the two went back to watching tv until they fell asleep.

The next morning the mother woke them up and told them about the appointment. Having forgotten to come up with an excuse, Hannah and Greg soon found themselves in the back seat on their way to the school.

Their parents dropped them off and left while Greg and Hannah met with their advisers. They found themselves wandering the campus looking for somewhere to go and ways to get home.

"Hey Greg!" Hannah exclaimed "Follow me, I left a trail of potato chips leading to a bus stop."

"Great idea Hannah! I always forget where those things are" he shook his head.

The two went off to follow the trail, but to their dismay, the campus squirrels ate all of their trail away. So Hannah and Greg once again found themselves with no where to go. They decided to ask people for instructions to the bus stop or another way to get home, and the first person they came across was an old man.

The old man told them he would help them get home if in return they would come back to his office and help him figure out the new online grading system. He explained to them how much he hated computers and thought maybe they could help.

They both agreed, desperate to get home.

When they arrived back at his office Hannah hopped right onto the computer and quickly figured out how the system worked. Greg helped the old professor with the grading and told Hannah the grades and comments to give each student.

A few hours later they finished and the old man thanked them and called them a cab. On their way home the two were quiet, both lost in thought. At the same time as the other they both exclaimed "I want to go back!"

"I loved working on the computer" Hannah smiled.

"And I loved grading with the professor" Greg smiled.

The two returned to the campus to declare their majors and figure out housing arrangements.

Years later Hannah works happily in IT and Greg replaced the old professor after he passed away.

Both are happy and their parents couldn't be prouder.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
