When I think about travel, I can't help but think about my experiences while teaching in South Korea. I had a lot of fun in that country. Here are some things that I'll go back for in a hot minute!
The Spa
Going to the spa on the weekend is a part of the Korean culture, and this custom is on the top of the list of the things that miss in South Korea. The cost for a luxurious spa experience was minimum, and my time there was always so relaxing (except for the body scrub).
Korean Fast Food
What did I eat while I was in South Korea? I ate a lot of Korean street food. My favorite street food was grilled chicken on a skewer.I also liked the kimbap (Korean sushi roll). I drank too many milkshakes, too. They were just too cool. Available in convenience stores throughout Korea, the milkshakes came in a bag like the juice boxes in America.
The Beaches
I loved the beaches of Busan. They were fun, clean, and safe. I liked going there in the late spring or early fall. That was the the way to beat the crowds. All of Korea seemed to want to go during the peak months of summer when the weather was scorching hot. I enjoyed walking around the beach, shopping and having my choice of restaurants with food that reminded me a little of home.
Feeling Safe
Maybe I felt a sense of false security while there, but I felt safe from some of the common criminal activity I back home. Parents allow their young children to walk home from their schools in South Korea alone, late at night. In Busan, where I lived. Regular folk did not have guns. I don't even think that the police officers carried guns in my neighborhood. However, alcoholism was a problem and once my friend and I were hassled by a drunk guy in a restaurant. He interrupted our conversation with his drunken shouting about the NBA.
Shopping, Shopping, Shopping
There were so many places to shop there. The prices were great at the time, and I always found the cutest clothes and shoes. In Korea, image was everything. As shallow as it might sound, it was important to look fashionable, and beauty was certainly an asset. A lot of people in Asia like to visit South Korea to shop (and maybe for plastic surgery). There are tons of doctors specializing in plastic surgery, but I didn't use their services.
