Even prior to the cancellation of Netflix’s House of Cards, viewers speculated that Mindhunter would serve as the perfect replacement for the show. David Fincher serves as the executive producer for both shows, and also directed several episodes of each series. Personally, I stopped watching House of Cards after about the fourth season because I felt that after season one, the show started to lose steam. Characters who I liked and rooted for were killed off and while Spacey and Robin Wright’s performances are brilliant and entertaining, they weren’t enough to keep me watching. Mindhunter, however, looks to be a much more promising project.
The series, which is based off of a book by the same name, stars Jonathan Groff of Broadway success Hamilton. It's a seventies drama that chronicles the birth of criminal psychology. While Spacey’s character in House of Cards is impossible to sympathize with, Groff’s character Holden Ford is much more likable and relatable. In Mindhunter, Groff plays a former FBI hostage negotiator who gets a job teaching at the training academy in Quantico. There, he meets fellow instructor Bill Tench (played by Holt McCallany) who recruits him to teach on his road school where they educate police officers about FBI techniques. The bulk of the series focuses on Holden’s research project, which attempts to reveal more about criminal psychology through interviewing serial killers. Not only are the characters multidimensional and likable, but the subject matter of the show is incredibly intriguing. Fincher’s directing is both crisp and moody, which perfectly sets the tone for the dark drama. I would recommend that everyone checkout what is now one of my favorite shows.
