Our Generation Will Be Okay

Millennials. That's what they call us. Well, anyone in the 18-33 age group. I love the generation that I was born in. This generation has the ability to do so much and create better advances for humankind.

However, to me, it seems as if adults love to criticize what this generation has done or is doing. I honestly do not know if our generation is any different from ones in the past other than we grew up in the Information Age. Information is available to the masses at an incredibly faster speed than previous generations, so it shouldn't be a surprise when anyone knows about anything.

We have a faster world that only forces us to adapt quickly. That is our only way to survive, we must evolve. However, it seems what we are doing when we are not making advances in the world is a problem for our elders. One of the biggest critiques for millennials would be work ethic. Our elders insist that we are nothing but entitled and lazy cell phone glued kids that have nothing to work for. They see us glued to our electronics and automatically assume that we are nothing but our cell phones.

Another critique that I have seen for this generation is the music. I think the hip-hop/rap "angst," for lack of a better term, is almost identical to the rise of Rock & Roll in the 70s & the 80s. It seems the older generations love to criticize what this generation is doing as if we are solely the cause of every crisis in the world. As if it was our generation that enforced racial barriers in public places. As if it was our generation that enslaved millions of people. What real problems has this generation caused? I can definitely think of a few, but none as catastrophic and monumental than our forefathers.

Some millennials still carry out the old teachings and ways of their ancestors, i.e. racism, sexism and homophobia. However what have we really done that has been detrimental to the advancement of humankind? I believe that if the previous generations had what the youth has now they would exist as we do today. We always get told that when a new fad or trend comes along it is nothing new but when something negative or not so pleasing occurs it's all our fault and we started it. How is that possible?

Being told that were defensive when taking criticism may be another problem but I can assure that people who aren’t millennials felt the same way when they were in our shoes. We may think we know it all and I promise we don’t. We may think we can do it all but we may not be able to. But that is all for the millennials themselves to decide.

Just because you were born in a previous generation doesn't mean your ideologies of life apply today. Things change. Lifestyles change. How people interact change. Previous generations are worried about what will happen when we are in charge and I can say that we will be fine and worry about the generation to follow as our predecessors and their predecessors have done before them. We will be fine. The world will still turn and the millennials will be making things better.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
