I can't really put into coherent words why this phrase gets me so fired up. The thought that so many young people in this country couldn't care less about politics, believing it will never directly affect them when it's really our future at stake here, blows my mind. It also bothers me knowing that baby boomers are out here voting for shitty politicians when key issues in this country relate to the concerns of young citizens. Again, this is our future we're dealing with here, not theirs.
I promise you, your vote counts.
People really underestimate the power our voices can entail and the privilege we have to vote. They don't realize that the youth vote can sway the results of elections because of what a diverse group we are. Other times, most youngsters are confused or not properly educated on the intentions of the candidates, which is why they're discouraged to participate in elections and choose to sit out on it altogether. This, however, is an unhelpful move. What exactly are you achieving by refusing to participate? How does this help anything?
Remember the iconic 2016 presidential election, where the whole country had to choose between two evils to be their leader? The number of young voters who deliberately ignored this election because "they both suck, so I'd rather not vote for either of them" is astonishing.
Like, yes, we know that. We all knew that. But this is still not a valid reason to not vote. In cases like these, you should always pick the lesser of two evils. Again, it doesn't hurt to vote, and you definitely don't have anything to lose. While your all your options may suck, it's best to treat this election like a game of would you rather instead of completely ignoring it altogether.
Not voting doesn't help anyone's case, because it definitely gets nothing done. What do you have to lose by going out there and voting? Absolutely nothing.
I wish more young citizens would realize that millennials can become the largest and most powerful group driving future elections in the U.S., as long as we all care about politics starting now. We as a generation are a powerful political force who refuse to believe this due to a lazy misconception that our one in a million voice doesn't count for anything and will make no difference.
To those college students who haven't registered to vote and don't plan on it: you may not care now, but you might later on.
