A Millennial's Attitude

Why millennials have the attitude they do.

The attitude of millennials has come into question many times. Older generations call us ungrateful and lazy. Younger generations do not understand what being a millennial is because they are still to young to understand what being a millennial is. Growing up as a millennial I have definitely learned a lot about society and how society looks at my generation. Not all millennials are bad or ungrateful or lazy, we are just tired.

We are tired of being judged by our elders or by media. We are constantly being judged by our peers based on what type of phone we have or the clothing labels we wear or how much money we spend on certain items. Not all of us have can be as fortunate as others but we find ways to find get what we want. Yes we ask our parents for money but that is because everything nowadays cost a lot more money then it did even in the 90s. A lot of us spend out summers working retail or service jobs or we nanny for families so that way we can afford what we want. Many millennials pay for their own college tuition and college is not getting any cheaper, in fact it only keeps going up. Media also puts an image of what the perfect person looks like and if you do not look like that then you are not pretty. Media likes to degrade people and that gets tiring after awhile.

Millennials also have to work most of the time two jobs to pay for anything and this is on top of going to school for most. It is no wonder why a lot of millennials do not have people skills because we spend so much time working or studying we forget how to interact with people and hone our people skills. There is also a stigma in society that if you do not go to college you will never be successful but some people just cannot either afford to go to college or college is not the place for them. This stigma also affects millennials in a big way because those of us that go to college feel the need to be extremely successful so we do not live up to this stigma. This makes everything more competitive which can cause people to fail.

Millennials do not get enough credit for working all the time or studying all the time. School and work are usually top priorities of millennials. Yes millennials may not be the nicest people but we are tired of being treated like we are lesser people. We have feelings, we are people as well. We have opinions, we have views, and we have morals. Are attitudes are based on what society tells us is right and wrong.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
