Millennial Republicans, Let's Have A Chat

We really need to get some facts straight

Millennial Republicans, Let's Have A Chat
Huffington Post

When I read the title Being A Millennial Republican Means Being Oppressed, I was a little taken a back. But it was reading the subtitle “And honestly, I freaking love it.” That shocked me to my core. Ms. Lyman, you absolutely can’t believe that you love being oppressed. I mean for one thing you are a woman and our gender has been through millennia of oppression, and do you think a single one of them loved it? Perhaps they lived with it, but no means love it, so I sincerely ask that you go look at what it really means to be oppressed and get back to me on that. Now I’m not looking to start a Facebook type comment war on Odyssey. After all you wrote your article in response to another article titled Stop Complaining About How Hard It Is To Be A Millennial Republican. However, upon reading your article we really need to clear some things up so I would like to respond to each of your points.

You say, “We will not be silenced”

I agree that the other author should not have asked you to shut up, you are an American citizen and have every right to speak your opinion. Just as everyone else has a right to rebut your opinion. Because that’s the whole point of opinions! They aren’t facts; therefore, we can debate them as much as we like. You know what is a fact, that so many Republicans who supported Trump are now regretting the decision, friends of mine included. And while we are on the subject of facts, let’s talk about the candidate you just defended.

Yes, Trump graduated from University of Pennsylvania. But you really think his father’s wealth didn’t have a role to play in Trump’s acceptance. I mean he got himself removed from the draft around 4-5 times. You know why he is wealthier than most people will ever be? Because the man knows how to scam people. People paid Trump $35,000 in tuition each to attend his prestigious university which was later found out to be a scam. And he’s doing the same now because many people aren’t just “upset” about pulling out of the Paris Agreement or attempts to repeal Obamacare, we are infuriated. He is literally killing the planet we all share regardless of your political affiliation and he is attempting to strip 2.5 million people of their health insurance. I don’t know about you but I enjoy staying healthy.

“I'll stop aligning myself with Republicans when you stop aligning yourself with Democrats.”

I don’t care if it’s more difficult for you to have to go in depth about your beliefs. If you don’t prescribe to the beliefs of a specific party then don’t align yourself with them. Do you know why I proudly say, “I’m a Democrat, I’m a Liberal”? It’s because I’m proud of my party and the work it does so I sing it from the rooftops. If you don’t agree with your party then stop saying you are a Republican. If you don’t align with Mike Pence, Donald Trump, Jeff Sessions, Rex Tillerson, etc., STOP CALLING YOURSELF A REPUBLICAN. Because they are the face of that party now. So yeah, I’m going to call you sexist if you voted for the guy that said it was OK to grab a woman by her genitals and force himself on top of women.

Also, I’m so sorry you’re a woman and I just don’t understand how you’re OK with these old men making decisions for your body. I won’t get into abortions and birth control cause that’s another article in itself, but I mean c’mon

About Opinions and Rights

I think you have your third point very backwards. First let me state I’m glad you are for gay marriage so my references to it will not be against you, just as an example. Opinions cannot dictate law, that’s why have a separation of church and state because the religion you choose really is a matter of opinion in the grand scheme of things. And yes, there can be conflict about Republicans or Democrats dictating people’s lives, so let’s hash out some of your examples.

For the second amendment, as much as many Democrats hate guns and wish they weren’t around you seem to not realize what they are trying to do in government. Many Democrats simply are asking for stricter gun laws so we can prevent mentally ill individuals, criminals, and otherwise disturbed or irresponsible people from obtaining guns and causing many of the mass shootings we have seen in our lifetime. We want to keep everyone safe, not come into your homes and steal all your guns. You know why we believe everyone should have the right to birth control, abortion services, prenatal care? Because no child, teenager, or woman should ever be forced to have a child. Are you really gonna stare a rape victim in the face and say, “have the baby of the man who violated you”? We want it paid for so that those in low income areas have the option. Key word: option! Nobody is forced to have an abortion or take birth control, it’s there if they need it.

And aren’t you a college student? You can’t really be telling me that you wouldn’t love to have your tuition paid for in full and be debt free, with no cost to your family. We want everyone to have the ability to attend college because everyone in this country deserves an education. The fact is this “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality just doesn’t hold true anymore. To get many places in this country you need money and an education. Democrats widely believe this should be provided by the government.

Yes, you did elect a bigot

I’m sorry to break it to you but no matter how many excuses you make, you did elect a bigot. Your comment about how Trump’s recounts of grabbing women’s genitals were disgusting but still the same as your high school guy friends, is exactly the problem. First off, Trump is a man in power, and no man in power should ever disrespect women the way he has, and so publicly. I have many male companions and I can tell you that none of them would ever speak about women in such a manner. Because they are educated enough to know that women are humans and not a pound of flesh for you to play with as you please.

Also, I’m sorry, but Trump and his supporters are racist, you really can’t deny that. First off in 1973 Trump and his father started a housing development in NYC. Trump and his father actually were then put under investigation because it was found that Trump Management has “had refused to rent or negotiate rentals ‘because of race and color ... It also charged that the company had required different rental terms and conditions because of race and that it had misrepresented to blacks that apartments were not available.” Also, many Trump supporters have burned effigies of former President Barack Obama or lynched them in protest. There were nearly 900 hate incidents in the U.S. after Trump was elected in those first 10 days.

And as far as ‘illegals’ go, wasn’t this country founded on the idea of giving everyone a better life. As seen on the Statue of Liberty:

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

In Conclusion

I’m sorry if people ever made you feel bad just for being a Republican. Some Republicans have redeemable qualities about them and nobody should be ostracized for their political beliefs. I have many liberal friends but I also have many Republican friends and I am perfectly happy to hear them out, as long as they give me the same courtesy. To your point about Trump appointing Ben Carson and that makes him not racist, sorry no. Basically his whole cabinet is white, besides Carson, and most of it is male, besides DeVos. There’s this cool thing where even companies have to hire certain amount of ethnic or people of color workers so they don’t appear racist.

I won’t ask you to apologize for your ideals cause that’s silly, you don’t apologize for opinions. But the opinion that not every woman needs care for their bodies, the opinion that the government shouldn’t pay for healthcare, the opinion that not everyone should get an education, actually hurts much of the American public.

Donald Trump doesn’t love America, he loves money and he loves himself. I don’t agree with it but I can see how some people voted for him, but now that he's in office doesn’t some of the things he does bother you? He wants to take healthcare away from 2.5 million Americans. Is that loving your country? He doesn’t care if the planet dies and us along with it.

I’ll leave you with the famous words of Thomas Jefferson,

“When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty”

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
