Well, folks, it seems like Donald Trump has finally selected a running mate, choosing Indiana governor Mike Pence to join his assemblage of fellow "real Americans" on their quest to "make America great again." But who is this Mike Pence? So you don't have to wonder -- because it's truly disheartening to read -- here are his unnerving stances on several key issues.
1. Sponsored bill to prohibit federal funding of Planned Parenthood.
Pence led a years long crusade against Planned Parenthood, saying in regards to it in 2011 that, "I think it comes as a surprise ... to most Americans that the largest abortion provider in the country is the largest recipient of federal funding under Title X. We can stop that."
2. Signed bills restricting women's access to abortions.
This law among other restrictions requires women to be responsible for cremating miscarried or aborted children, and not allowing abortions for fetuses with abnormalities. He has signed other bills in the past in order to restrict women traveling to get abortions as well.
3. Voted yes on constitutionally defining marriage as between a man and woman.
This vote cast in 2006, is one of many anti-gay sentiments Pence has expressed. He supported amendments to ban same sex weddings, had discussed funding for conversion therapy and opposed the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Most recently he has faced scrutiny for signing a law to allow religious freedom to protect Christian businesses and churches if they discriminate (the bill was since revised after backlash).
4. Denies climate change.
"I don't know that that is a resolved issue in science today ... just a few years ago we were talking about global warming. We haven't seen a lot of warming lately. I remember back in the '70s we were talking about the coming ice age."
The above quote is Pence on global warming. In 2001, he called climate change a "myth" stating Indiana's harsh winter as proof. Last year, he tried to block Obama's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants with the Clean Power Plan, and has voted against limiting greenhouse gas emissions.
5. Strong advocate of Second Amendment.
Pence voted to protect gun sellers and manufacturers resulting from the misuse of guns and was given an A by the NRA for being a pro-gun proponent.
6. Condemned putting children in daycare and the working parent.
"Sure, you can have it all, but your day care kids get the short end of the emotional stick."
In 1997, Pence wrote a letter to the editor in which he condemned households with two working parents, making claims that daycare children are emotionally stunted. However, he also voted no on having four weeks of paid parental leave, offering conflict if he believes that parents should be home with their children.
7. He shares Trumps views on border control.
"I believe we need to focus first and foremost -- as Donald Trump has done with such force and such passion -- on border integrity and building the wall,"
And we have another supporter of Trump's plan to "build a wall" between the U.S. and Mexico, believing that they will pay for it as well. Pence also rejects amnesty, suggesting that undocumented persons should leave the country.
8. Voted against paycheck fairness.
In 2009, Pence voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act and twice against the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that allowed women to bring pay discrimination charges against their employer after each paycheck. Essentially, his votes have suppressed the rights of women, thus far, and I fear what may come next as a woman if he is elected as vice president.
With these stances to look forward to (voice filled with sarcasm), Pence and Trump are off on a bigoted and sexist path to supposedly "making America great again" and I, with many others, collectively hold our breaths as election day draws nearer.
