For a movie about one of the biggest turning points in World War II, "Midway" wasn't too outstanding from the crowd of war-period films. But it does the job to inspire the audience's patriotism with every cheesy line's delivery, and it's just in time for Veteran's Day.
The historical drama is based on real-life sailors and leaders who fought in the Battle of Midway and the events leading up to the fateful day.
About three years in the making, the movie's visual effects have traces of director Roland Emmerich's science-fiction disaster movies like "Independence Day" and "The Day After Tomorrow." With that being said, assume that the visuals are excessive and unrealistic most of the time.
Emmerich leads a strong and predominately male cast including Dennis Quaid, Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Ed Skrein, Aaron Eckhart, Darren Criss and Nick Jonas. Mandy Moore plays Ed Skrein's loyal movie wife, and her fiery attitude feels forced as if to say "she's not a traditional housewife because she can think for herself."

Sometimes the writing is laughable yet standard of war movies that focus more on the visuals than the script --- "Pearl Harbor," anyone? And the delivery isn't really helping its case. Though at the same time, the structure of the script is commendable. The film spends an appropriate amount of time delving into events before Midway like Pearl Harbor, Doolittle's raid and a fair amount of Japanese naval strategy meetings. Giving more depth to Midway helps viewers stay interested, even if some feel lost in the noise.
But if audiences still aren't entertained, maybe the patriotic tones will resonate with people. When a pilot dives to drop a bomb for a direct hit, it's impossible to not cheer for the American soldiers. Despite clear-cut good guys versus bad guys movie, it's nice to see a dedication to both the American and Japanese soldiers who risked their lives and sacrificed everything for freedom and pride, and that's what patriotism is all about.
"Midway" earns 5/10 stars. The movie is in theaters on Friday, November 8, 2019.
