If you are like me, there is a direct correlation between how far into a semester you are and your level of procrastination. It is just so difficult to want to complete schoolwork when spring break, graduation, and the summer are in arm's length. However, school is very important—or that is what I am told. Thus, I have prepared a five step guide to help you make it to May.
1. Momentum by sebtab.com
This Google Chrome extension welcomes you to the web with a personalized greeting, images of beautiful locations, and inspirational quotes. It also allows you to place your to-do list on your home page, making it easier to see what you have left to do and more rewarding when you can delete the item.
2. StayFocused by Transfusion Media
Another Google Chrome extension, StayFocused allows you to allot a certain amount of time each day to "time wasting" websites. Once the time has expired, the websites are blocked until the next day.
3. Study Schedules
The process of creating a schedule increases motivation. It is in your control to determine when you will study in your free time, and, when you are the one making the decision, it is easy to follow through. Society19 creates an easy guide to help you start your first study schedule.
4. Write your notes, then rewrite your notes
It sounds awful, I know. But it has been effective for me. In classes where it is applicable, I write all of my notes by hand. There have been studies that have proven that handwritten notes are comprehended more than typed notes. Then, I work to transfer those notes to a word document. This requires me to reread the information and internalize it more. It also puts it into a more concise and clean document form, which is helpful around test time.
5. Flashcards by StudyBlue
I love handwritten flashcards, but they take forever to create and leave your hand cramping. Therefore, in college, I have started using online flashcards. StudyBlue, my favorite resource, makes it easy to create flashcards. They also have an app, so you can study on the go without carrying a bunch of note cards around. They create review sheets for you with all the information from the note cards. You can also share your cards with others, and it's free, too.
No matter what, school is hard. Creating motivation is even more difficult for the current generation because of distractions like Netflix, social media, and the college social scene in general. However, I have faith we can all put our grown-up pants on and conquer this semester.
