Eyebrows seem to be the biggest trend of this year and certainly took over 2015's beauty Instagram pages. Brow products were all the rage with familiar names like "Anastasia Beverly Hills" becoming frequently used in makeup lovers' vocabularies. Earlier this year, Benefit released an entire line of solely brow products intended to make even the makeup dunce have the ability to have "brows on fleek." The latest and greatest trend? Microblading.
I know what you're thinking: tattooing your face? For those of you who don't know what microblading is, allow me to elaborate. Microblading is a procedure that can cost anywhere from $800 up to $3000, depending on where you are and who the service is offered by. Essentially, it's an X-Acto knife dipped in cosmetic ink and used to make tiny cuts in the eyebrows, giving the patient the appearance of "natural brow hairs." Coming from someone who has never had well-defined brows, I was immediately set on hopping on the microblading bandwagon; however, I decided to do some more research before plopping myself in the beautician's chair, and boy am I glad I did.
I spoke to a cosmetic tattoo artist and a plastic surgeon in my area. I will keep these sources anonymous so as to protect them from the possibility of defamation from readers or commenters. Both of my sources are licensed professionals who have over 25 years of experience in their fields, and they both told me that microblading is a fad for multiple reasons, which I will summarize and list for you here.
1. Eyebrow trends change every few months to a couple years.
The "thick-brow" Cara Delevigne eyebrows won't be super popular for long, so it's best to keep them on the thinner side and fill in with pencil, gel or powder -- not tattoo them thick.
2. Microblading is done by hand, not a machine.
The blade used to implant the pigment into the skin does not go far enough into the layers of the skin in order to give the permanent results everyone desires.
3. Have you ever drawn on cloth with a permanent marker?
You know how the marker feathers out and fades? The same thing happens with microblading. After a few short months, the results begin to feather, fade and blur due to the fact that the pigment is not implanted deep enough in the skin.
4. The results only last about six months to a year.
This is contrary to all of the beauty blogs, which say this last approximately five years or permanently.
5. The process of microblading is way more expensive than actually getting your brows cosmetically tattooed.
Cosmetic tattooing is, on average, $500 for both brows. Microblading is, as stated previously, $800 to $3000. You'll spend more money for poorer results.
From one makeup and beauty lover to the next, I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life. What you do with your face is your business; however, I'm coming from a place of research and overall good intent. I would hate for you to spend such an exorbitant amount of money and the results you end up with look less than stellar. So, if you're considering microblading because you saw it on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube or anywhere else, think twice. Don't do it for the 'Gram.
