When you're in school, it seems like it's a constant cycle of alteration between playing catch up with sleep and school work. Plus, winter rolled up before we knew it, and seasonal depression (and never-ending midterms/finals) are settling in.
When you happen to find a spare weekend, there doesn't seem like many options to get away because let's admit it. We're all broke. But, thanks to Michigan being the best state EVER, that doesn't have to be the case.
Here are some places to check out, when you can finally pencil in a mini vacation for your sanity.
1. Downtown Detroit
An instant pick-me-up. Tickets are very reasonable, and it'll be sure to put you in the Christmas mood.
1c. Detroit Winter Blast
Once winter has fully settled in, Campus Martius becomes a breathtaking winter wonderland. There is skating, decorative lights and a zip line, too.
2. Lake Michigan
Seriously, a day trip here is minimally expensive if you do it right. It's just as breathtaking and relaxing in the winter, too! You can explore the frozen over coast, and settle into many of the quaint cafes surrounding the public access points (ft. New Buffalo).
3. Grand Marais
Thought dog sledding was just something that happened in remote places or in movies? Think again. Grand Marais has the races throughout the winter, and you won't want to pass up the opportunity to see it for yourself.
4. Frankenmuth
A little German hideaway is the perfect place to boost your holiday spirits. Aside from the actual holiday days, prices are affordable- and there's a super cute Bronner's Christmas store right in the center for all of your new (probably unnecessary) holiday decor.
5. Holly Dicken's Festival
Each year, this small town puts on a couple of weekends for family fun. The streets are decorated, and there are places to do Christmas competitions and a great parade.
6. Cadillac
Snowmobile central. If you want a break from reality, and have your own snowmobile or are fine renting, head to Cadillac. They have over 200 miles of trails weaving throughout forests/ up and down hills- so it's a unique place to check into for the weekend.
7. Great Wolf Lodge
Your childhood self will thank you. There are ~adult getaways~ throughout the lodge, as well as letting yourself go in the 22,000 gallons of water throughout the park.
8. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
If you didn't know it existed, you'd never guess this gorgeous landmark was in Michigan. Nestled up in the upper peninsula, it's one of the most underrated places in the country. Although it's a great summer trip, it's breathtaking when it freezes over, too.
9. Depot Town
Starting on East Grand River in Detroit, there's a couple of blocks of colorful, eye-catching murals painted on by various artists. The best part is it's always changing, so every time you go you can expect to see something new.
11. Alpine Chocolat Haus
Right in Boyne City, it's kept on the down low but is definitely a necessity if you're in the area.
12. M-22
A gorgeous drive no matter the season. Even if it's a little out of your way, the extra few minutes spent will be well worth the views.
13. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
Since there's close to 200 inches of snowfall annually, there's no end to the hiking, skiing, or ice fishing you can do.
