Summertime in northern Michigan, you say? I say that summertime all over Michigan is the most ideal! Growing up in a suburb near Detroit, I've always shown much appreciation for The Mitten and all of it's hidden treasures, and I'm a major believer that everyone should visit certain places at least once in their life. SO, here are 10 locations to add to your Michigan bucket-list:
1. Sleeping Bear Dunes
Located in Northern Michigan, the Sleeping Bear Dunes are one of Michigan's most iconic locations. One of 417 National parks in the United States, this destination is a must, simply for it's gorgeous views overlooking Lake Michigan and the adventurous appeal to the large sand dunes. In my opinion, this is hands down one of the most beautiful places in all of Michigan.
2. Traverse City
Also located in Northern Michigan, Traverse City is an amazing city with plenty of personality and culture. If you find yourself up there in early July, you'd be able to witness the grand Traverse City Cherry Festival that takes place every year. Want something fun to do with the whole family? Spend a day at the beach on the edge of the Grand Traverse Bay, or enjoy a day of mini golf and adventure at Pirates Cove Adventure Park. Enjoy the beauty that encompasses and defines Traverse City.
3. Lexington
On the other side of the state lies the quaint little town of Lexington. On the shoreline of Lake Huron, Lexington is the definition of a small town with its cute little market and shops that everyone will enjoy. Personally, I love walking on the Lexington Pier and admiring beautiful Lake Huron. Lexington is the perfect day trip when you want the feeling of an up-north experience but in a more convenient location.
4. Mackinac Island
Want a vacation where you travel back in time? Mackinac Island is for you. An island in-between the upper and lower peninsulas of the state of Michigan, Mackinac has the charm and class of a great vacation destination. Travel around the island by either horse-drawn-carriage or bike, since cars are not allowed on the island. While you're there, make sure you see the gorgeous Grand Hotel overlooking the Mackinac Bridge, and be sure to stop at one of the many shops on Main Street to pick up some of Mackinac's iconic fudge.
5. Campus Martius, downtown Detroit
If there's one symbol for the hopeful future of the city of Detroit, it's Campus Martius, located directly in the heart of downtown. There something to do for everyone. Enjoy drinks at the Parc Bar or sit in the man-made beach after getting food from the food trucks that line the street. There's a contagious feel-good attitude just by walking through Campus Martius and it's a convenient location for anyone who just wants to have a fun night out.
6. Higgins Lake
Recently voted the best inland lake in the state of Michigan, Higgins lake is a gorgeous spot for all ages to enjoy. From water sports, to beaches, to the campsites that line the shore, Higgins Lake is a great location to make memories with the whole family.
7. Grand Rapids
Another feel-good city, Grand Rapids is the perfect destination for both a night out and a weekend away. Located on the east side of the state, Grand Rapids is good for just about anything-- food, drinks, nightlife, everything. You name it. I've only been a few times, but every single time has been a night to remember.
8. The Adventure Park, West Bloomfield
The Adventure Park is a great idea for those summer days spent brainstorming what to do. The Adventure Park is an all-age high ropes course that's sure to satisfy you're need for fun. A unique feature of this specific high ropes course is the option to participate in the Twilight adventure, when the course is lit with fairy lights and you can climb through the tree and zip line under the stars.
9. Belle Isle
For a completely unique experience, visit Belle Isle for a dual-country experience. Located right by the city of Detroit, Belle Isle has so much to offer, including a public beach and a newly refurbished aquarium and conservatory. Want to know the best part? If you stand on the shore and look to your right, you can admire the Detroit skyline; if you look to your left, you can gaze at the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario.
10. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
By far one of the most gorgeous locations in Michigan, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a gorgeous spot located at the top of the upper peninsula. Definitely a hike to get to for any Trolls (term for those living under/below the Mackinaw bridge, those in the lower peninsula,) this National Lakeshore is a bucket-list destination for many Michiganders. Admire the beauty of the rock formations while overlooking a beautiful sunset on the great Lake Superior.
