Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people age 10 to 24. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza and chronic lung disease, combined.
For those of you who don't know about this story, you might be a little disappointed that you opened this. This young girl's story is rare, and it is disturbing.
Michelle Carter is a young girl who helped her boyfriend commit suicide. Yes, you read that right. Instead of helping him and doing anything to stop him, she encouraged him. She encouraged him, even when he doubted himself.
I've come across her story multiple times in the past couple of months, and the only word that can come to mind is disgusted. At first I thought, maybe she's just a dumb kid who was joking around with her boyfriend, but when they released her whole conversation with her boyfriend, I was mortified.
How could you continuously tell your boyfriend that suicide was a good idea? How could you not go to his family, and tell them about what he was trying to do, given his past experiences? Not only did Carter not go to her boyfriend's family and tell them, but every time she talked to her boyfriend she was discussing details about the suicide, and how and where he should do it. This girl had multiple chances to save her boyfriend's life, to help him out of his dark place, and instead she pushed him deeper into his hole. How many more people would be lost to suicide if people didn't try to help them, but actually encourage them that it's the right thing to do?
Michelle Carter was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Encouraging someone who is mentally unstable to kill themselves is just the same as putting the gun to their head if you ask me. She was rightly charged.
Suicide is never the answer. It shouldn't even be a question.
