A Message To Cancer

You won't win

A Message To Cancer
Nicole D'Aloisio

Cancer,

So we meet again, unfortunately. You're like a nightmare that will not end, and a rain storm that will not conclude...a wound that keeps bleeding, and a darkness that won't brighten. You hurt and you damage. You take and you take and you take. You're the true definition of a savage. You are the number one enemy. You are destructive and rude. Who do you think you are behaving in this way? Who died and made you king? You disgust me. You're pathetic. You think that you have the upper hand on all of us, but the truth is you won't ever win.

You can cause all of the pain and suffering that you want, but you won't win. We'll be the bigger person, accepting the fate that awaits us. Those cursed with your presence will fight long and hard. They'll face you in this crooked battle, knowing they gave it their all. Others affected will learn how to love heavier than they ever have. The struggle will bring us closer. Your punches will start to feel numb. Your power will diminish, as we grow stronger and united. We will find positives in the bad. You won't win.

Take my loved ones away long before their time should be up, but you won't win. You can strip them of their physical presence, stealing their last breath. You can rob me of their smile, their voice, and their touch. You can end our relationship here on Earth, but you will never interfere with our eternal bond. You will never erase our precious memories. We'll hold onto them long after your cruel self moves onto its next victim. We'll reminisce for a lifetime. We'll laugh and we'll cry while recalling the past. We will remember forever and always. We will honor our deceased. We will cherish our survivors. You won't win.

Oh, Cancer. You think you are so slick. But you're a cowardly bitch. You hide in the greatest of people, because you will never come close to their impact on the world. No one cares for you—they care for the people you're hurting. We will root against you until your end. We will find a way to cease your existence. I feel it. I know it. Technology is increasing and knowledge is expanding. Your intruding will come to a halt. Justice will be served for my grandpa, and her father, and his aunt, and their daughter and her best friend. Your death is coming. There will be a day when you reach extinction, and I'll be the first on line to flip you off with my goodbye. You won't win, Cancer. I will. He will. She will. They will. We will. But you won't win.

-Someone who won't surrender to you

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
