My dad had to work out-of-state for much longer than I would’ve liked when I was growing up. It’s true that I didn’t have it all that bad, it was only for a small period my life, but regardless, he was physically gone. As hard as it was for me and my sisters, it must have been that much harder for my mom. But she made it work, and always has, which is why I don’t remember that time as dark or sad; I remember it has exciting and adventurous.
My family, like many others I’m sure, doesn’t do vacations. We simply can’t afford them. But that didn’t stop my mom from turning a simple trip to visit my dad into just that. Not only did I get to see my dad, who I hadn’t seen in months, I got to experience new things during the days-long trips to Colorado and back.
Sure, there were some questionable hotels in the mix too, a very Bates looking one in Wyoming comes to mind, but we didn’t need fancy hotels or expensive attractions to enjoy ourselves.
It is possible to have exciting experiences without breaking the bank.
I know that everyone has a different reality and if you can afford it and want to take expensive trips, go for it, but just know that it’s not necessary in order to make memories that last.
It’s the collection of small things and the interactions between people that make or break an adventure.
It is also important to note that simple changes within a routine can have a similar effect. You don’t have to party in Florida for Spring Break to get a rush of excitement, you just have to make the effort. It is cliché to say that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade, but sometimes the truth is cringe-worthy.
A spontaneous meal or hanging out with a friend can give you a sense of change and adventure within your daily life, and once you realize the positive difference of shaking up your routine can have, you will realize that every situation can also be an opportunity.
My mom, sisters, and I knew we were in for a long trip, one that could have been painfully boring, but my mom saw the opportunity in the inevitable and gave me some of the best memories I have. So, try to look on the bright side to turn something dreaded into something you will think back on and smile. Turn a normal week into that time you tried something new.
I won’t pretend that this is the easier way; it takes some creativity, some motivation, and some imagination, but in the end, it is more worthwhile.
Sure, it was hard to leave my dad again after seeing him, but I don’t remember the trip home being a somber one. It is possible to turn a negative into a positive and to turn the usual into the exceptional.
When you’re feeling down about not having enough money for some trip, think about this: Traveling may not always in the budget, but a sense of adventure is.
