A week later I would like to refer back to the events of last Sunday. For a portion of the world, last Sunday was a day of peace, and a day of celebration. It was Easter. It was the day of Jesus's resurrection. That is what it was for me, a day of happiness and celebration with my family.
An early morning mass, pictures of the little ones in their Sunday best. Then the frantic Easter egg hunt for the kids, for the adults it consisted of hiding in the corner of the kitchen attempting to keep out of the way, but honestly nowhere was truly safe. Soon food was being inhaled in an attempt to subdue the bellies making whale noises and cry out "feed me."
Then the house was quiet as the five kids left and went to the park while Mom and I cooked dinner. We ate, cleaned the dishes and kitchen by 3:30pm, soon my relatives left and the house was again quiet. It was a good day a simple day.
"This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it."
While my day was simple it was horrific for others. They could not be glad in the day they had. Over 400 people had the worst Easter they could have. 72 people were killed, 36 were children At least 320 people were injured.
I am talking about the Easter Bombing of Lahore Park in Pakistan.
A suicide bomber armed with over 30 lbs. of explosive materials detonated near women and children targeting Christians celebrating on this holy day. While the Jamaat ul Ahrar, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had targeted Christians. But Christians account for only 2% of the population in Pakistan.
I cannot help but think that the only reason that we have heard of this attack is because of the day it fell on and this direct threat to the Christians at that event. If not would we have heard about the family of 10 Muslims who all died at Lahore Park?
If it had not fallen on Easter Sunday would it have fallen under our radar in the west like the other 114 attacks in the month of march? Would we have simply added these numbers to the 2836 injured?
Did you hear about the Boko Haram Attacks? 86 people were shot or burned to death reported on February 1st. Or about the seven officers killed just this week in Diyarbakir , Turkey?
I think the truth is that we don't want to hear. We know there are violence and hatred in the world but unless it is close to home we hide, simply putting a filter on a profile picture to show our support. Explain to me what that actually does for the people who have lost their loved ones?
To be in a place where you once you called home but now is Hell. We need to open our minds and see the fact that our world is a mess and try to do something about it rather than sit behind keyboards. Don't hide when you see an article that shares a piece of the world's pain. Share it. Make it known. Be kind to others, try not to hate what you can't understand.
Try to bring a little peace to your corner of the world. This isn't just about me, this isn't just about you. It's about every one of us, be you Christian, or Muslim, Jew, or Athiest, Buddist, or Hindu, we each need to work to bring peace back.
