Race often seems like a touchy subject and makes most people uncomfortable. We hate to discuss social and economic lines that separate us from others. It would be easy to ignore unfair subtle culture differences like money. One touchy racial subject is White privilege. What exactly does it mean? Does it exist?
White privileges are definitely not black privileges. It's crazy that is actually a real term. An example would be how African Americans can say that they are proud to be black, but if a white person says that they are proud to be white, they are compared to a Nazi. Besides that, there is also affirmative action, in which diversity is being forced to colleges, jobs, and universities, but takes opportunities away from qualified white people. Some say Black History month also falls into this, even though European History is taught in public schools 12 months out of the year, anyway, there is just no title for it.
White privilege has existed ever since slavery and segregation. The phrase gained publicity through an essay written by a white woman named Peggy Mcintosh in the late 1980s. She studied women's studies at Wellesley College. In her essay that popularized the phrase, she gave a multitude of examples of what white privilege is.
This phrase is seen as controversial, maybe even a conspiracy. It's argued that this term does not really exist. White people have all earned their perks and benefits, which is what David Horowitz has to say in his book "Black Skin Privilege and the American Dream." Peggy McIntosh says that black privilege is a prolonged complaint from white people who argue that there is even white privilege.
We could take a look at the statistics to evaluate its validity. When an employer views an applicant with a Caucasian name, there's a 50% greater chance that they are going to get called for an interview according to CNN.com. John Blake from "It's time to talk about Black Privilege" makes a point when he notes that if you took the wealth of a white household, and divided it by 13, you would get the wealth of a black household. In that same article, it was mentioned that when African Americans and Caucasian males would commit similar crimes, the Caucasian male would receive a sentence allowing them to spend 20% less time in jail. Compared to the wages of black people, white people earn 26.7 % more on average according to Money.Cnn.com and has been reported to be the worst wage gap in 40 years. On that same website, they also have been able to prove that the cause of this wage gap is employment discrimination and unfair wage distribution.
In conclusion, white privilege isn't just a list of things that white people can do. It's the benefits that white people have access to just because of the color of their skin. These things could be as simple as better wages, shorter sentences, and more employment. The system was built on a platform for whites to succeed in almost every way. That simply is what white privilege means. Take this Quiz to measure the amount of privilege you have if there is some doubt. https://www.buzzfeed.com/regajha/how-privileged-ar...
