We Need To Talk About The Privilege Of The "Lone Wolf" Shooter

White male terrorists are an issue we should discuss. On Monday, October 2nd, the largest mass shooting in modern US history occurred, the perpetrator being a while male.

The attack came as a surprise to most Americans, but within hours after the shooting news outlets across the country and the Las Vegas Police Department chose not to call this man a terrorist. Instead they chose to identify him as misunderstood, why you may ask? Simply the color of his skin.

America has been hesitant to label white male mass-shooters as domestic terrorists, and there's even more hesitation from politicians, law enforcement, and society. Mass shootings are an epidemic that have been met with passiveness for far too long.

If mass shootings were perpetrated mostly by POC, this would swiftly be turned into an immigration issue. If mass shooters were identified as Muslim, it would quickly become terrorism, and there would be immigration reforms. If hundreds died at the hands of black men, it would inflame the "angry black man" ideology.

Statistics show between 1982 and 2017 the majority of mass shootings were committed by, none other than, white men who are often labeled "psychologically impaired".

As a result, proper measures are not put into place to ensure these acts won't happen again – solely on the fear reforming policy that might not work to the advantage of many conservatives.

When people of Middle Eastern descent do something bad, it's terrorism, yet when events like the Sandy Hook School shooting, and the Charleston church shooting occurred, the perpetrators white males were simply "good" people who needed help. "Lone wolves."

America is currently stuck in a vicious cycle and to change that. We need our policy makers to create stricter gun laws. We need them to listen to the cries of the American people. We need them to put themselves in our shoes and do what is best for the public.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
