I woke up this morning to the news of another mass shooting. It's so heartbreaking that this has become a regular occurrence in this world. It's heartbreaking that someone thinks it's okay to go and shoot at thousands of people.
I believe that everything happens for a reason, but events like this make it hard for me to believe that. My prayers and thoughts are sent out to the victims of the Vegas shooting.
Hearing the news of the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012 was hard for me to take in. I was 13 and still in middle school. A man shot 20 students, as well as 6 adults, in a school. I, as well as the rest of the country, was astonished.
Most of the victims were kids. They had their whole life in front of them- high school graduation, college, falling in love, having kids, and growing old. But sadly, their time was ended to soon. Parents questioned how their kids safety would be guaranteed in schools, a place which was supposed to be safe. I went to New York City in the next few days following the shooting.
My dad took us to the Today Show not knowing that the Today Show would be airing a special on the Sandy Hook shooting. Pictures of each of the victims were looped on a monitor and the crowd stood in silence. In that moment, I couldn't understand how this could happen in world filled with so many wonderful opportunities.
In 2016, 49 people were killed in a night club in Orlando. Again, my jaw dropped at hearing this new. This had been the largest mass shooting in the United States. 49 people were killed- innocent people because a man was filled with hatred. I thought to myself, "Why is this happening again? Was the Sandy Hook shooting not a wake up call that change was needed?"
And now, at least 50 people have been identified as dead in Las Vegas. This is now the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Why is this becoming a "normal" thing? Why are innocent people being killed at the expense of people who may just need help?
These shootings bring up many questions and concerns for the United States. It brings attention to gun laws and mental illness. My prayers go out to the victims of all of these shootings, but my prayers also go out to the shooters and their families. It is sad that these people could only experience hatred in their life and couldn't find help or salvation.
I hope that reforms are made and security increases. I hope that mass shootings don't become more regular than they already are. I hope that all those in this world come to find happiness and love instead of hate.
