With the September 30 premiere of Marvel’s “Luke Cage” on Netflix, the team up of the “Defenders” is getting even closer.
In the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the “Defenders” will be a group of street level heroes fighting to protect New York City. The Defenders will be made up of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. At the moment, the first two seasons of “Daredevil,” the first season of “Jessica Jones” and the first season of “Luke Cage” are currently on Netflix.
The last Defender to make an appearance, Iron Fist, will have his own Netflix show premiere sometime in 2017. At the 2016 San Diego Comic Con, teaser trailers for the “Defenders” and “Iron Fist” were shown at the Marvel Studios panel.
Each different “Defender” brings a unique special ability or power to the table when trying to save the day. All of the Netflix Defenders are from different sections of New York City and during each series they work to protect their neighborhoods. When they finally team up in 2017, they will be working to defend New York and the rest of the world from the Hand, an ancient evil ninja organization.
Luke Cage, whose Netflix series was released at the end of September, received his powers of super strength and unbreakable skin through experimentation. The series follows Cage in his hometown of Harlem as he works to rebuild his life and combat the forces creating tension in his section of the city.
Cage, who will be the first black Marvel character to get a live action series, was first introduced in the comics back in the 1970s. The creators, who were inspired by the blaxploitation films of the time, wanted to empower comic book readers who were not used to seeing representations of themselves in comic books. The Netflix series has taken on the task of updating the character to the present day without relying on the stereotypes of the past.
Daredevil spends his days as blind lawyer Matt Murdock and spends his nights fighting crime in Hell’s Kitchen. In his Netflix series, Daredevil spent the first season working to defeat corrupt businessman Wilson Fisk. With the help of his law partner Foggy Nelson and their law firm’s secretary Karen Page, the team was able to take down Fisk and crooked colleagues. In the second season, Daredevil was faced with the dark side of vigilante justice when the violent Punisher started gunning down the criminals of Hell’s Kitchen. He also received a rude awakening from former girlfriend and ninja assassin Elektra Natchios. Daredevil is expertly skilled in martial arts, and received heightened senses after an accident with chemicals blinded him as a child.
Jessica Jones, whose her abilities of super strength and flight resulted from government experiment, also lives in Hell’s Kitchen as a private investigator. During her Netflix original series, she is confronted by Kilgrave, a man with the ability control people by command. Before the start of her series, Kilgrave had manipulated Jones and had a relationship with her against her own will. Throughout the series, Jones, her good friend Trish Walker work to defeat Kilgrave to prevent him from forcefully manipulating anyone else. Jessica Jones also meets Luke Cage in her series, which sets up their relationship from the comics. In the comics, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are married and have a young daughter named Danielle.
The final Defender, Iron Fist, has his Netflix series premiering in the spring of 2017. The series will follow Danny Rand, heir to the Rand Corporation as he takes on the mantle of the Iron Fist. Like Daredevil, Rand is skilled in martial arts, but Rand also received mystical abilities while in the city of K'un-Lun, which is in another dimension. Rand arrived in after a plane crash and after years of training and becoming the Iron Fist, Rand decides to return to Manhattan and take back his father’s company.
With the Netflix realm of Marvel Studios continuing to take shape, the introduction of Luke Cage is another step in creating a fully realized Marvel Cinematic Universe.
