It’s no surprise that "Captain America: Civil War" is upon us. The Avengers have been divided into Team Captain America (Ant-Man, Hawkeye, Agent 13, Captain America, Falcon and Winter Soldier) and Team Iron Man (War Machine, Black Widow, Iron Man, Black Panther, and Vision). There is no telling how this movie is going to turn out (or maybe we can, I haven’t read the comics), but there is no question this movie is going to have insane action, surprises, and just all out superhero brawls. However, everything that has led up to this event all lies within the previous movies that began in 2008 with the first "Iron Man."
Growing up, I never watched superhero movies. I never had an interest in them and honestly thought I would find them run of the mill, so I never bothered getting into them. All of that changed this year. For months on end, my guy friends would constantly be talking about Marvel films. I was so clueless and out of the loop that I always just let them talk with one another while I listened. After a while (I’m sure you could have guessed), it got so out of hand I couldn’t sit there any longer hearing all of these names I’ve never heard of, from movies I’ve never seen, in a world I’d never been a part of. I was told by them all to see the movies for the last year and guess what? I finally did it. I gave into peer pressure and I couldn’t be happier I did. I love these movies. So for anyone who has never seen them and thinks, “Eh, I probably won’t like them,” you have to try and see them because I’m obsessed at this point.
There is really no point in going over the plots of the films because everyone has either already seen them or if you haven’t, go into them with no knowledge like me. It will make them even better. For anyone new to the world though, I can tell you that there is a certain order you have to watch the films in because they all connect as part of the “Marvel World.” I originally thought it would be sufficient to watch "Iron Man" 1, 2, and 3 in a row and then move onto the next superhero, but this is not the case at all. Watching them in the order they came out is the way to go because due to the fact that every hero lives in the same world, their stories do not go one after another where Iron Man has his own period of time and then, for example, Captain America comes into the picture after all of Iron Man’s adventures are done. As a result, the order you have to watch the movies are as follows: "Iron Man," "Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor," "Captain America: The First Avenger," "The Avengers," "Iron Man 3," "Thor: The Dark World," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Avengers: Age of Ultron," and "Ant-Man."
Each movie usually has a post-credits scene that teases the next movie. I remember seeing the first "Iron Man" and after the credits, they had a scene that showed Nick Fury telling Iron Man that he wanted to talk to him about The Avenger Initiative. I know I might sound extremely ignorant to hardcore Marvel fans, but when I saw the first "Iron Man" I wasn’t familiar with the Marvel “world,” and it hit me after that scene that all of these superheroes all exist together and that they will all eventually come together in "The Avengers" and "Age of Ultron." Same goes for "Iron Man 2." In the post-credits scene, they set up "Thor" by having his silver hammer discovered in the desert. Every film that went by I got more and more excited to keep going because it felt like a never-ending string of ending credit hooks to get you psyched for the next one.
So all of these superheroes in the Marvel universe (Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and Ant Man) all have their own movies that lead up to the first "Avengers" film (expect for Ant Man, which came out last year). Let me tell you, as someone who got into all of these franchises really quickly, the anticipation to see the first "Avengers" film was unreal. After being introduced to everyone and then getting to see them come face to face and fight together, I mean, seriously. What could be better? Then, we have Spider Man. I have to say I have only seen the two original Spider Man movies with Toby Maguire, but "Captain America: Civil War" is going to be the first movie where Spider Man is thrown into the mix with all the characters. I’m sure it'll be amazing.
Again, this is no news to Marvel fans, but the amount of superheroes in this world is unheard of. I thought after the first "Avengers" came out, that was it. Those were the only heroes in the Marvel universe. I know, I’m not proud of my past Marvel ignorance either guys… But, you know, I’m learning and I’m just happy I can now talk to all of my friends about it. Anyway, what I was saying was that there are many more superheroes within this world and more movies are being made about each of these heroes (the newest one being "Dr. Strange" coming out later this year).
So, after you have finally caught up with all of the Marvel films, you can see "Captain America: Civil War." Congratulations, it’s like a gift. You get to watch all of the Marvel movies and you get rewarded with the pleasure of witnessing a battle between some of the biggest heroes in the Marvel universe. Maybe it just feels like a gift to me because I’m way too into this stuff right now, because it's all new to me. So if you're a huge Marvel fan or a slowly growing fan, I’m sure you can feel my excitement. It’s gotten bad, but I just love talking about it so much with my friends. I have officially been turned. I’m a proud Marvel movie fan.
