Everton have been a chore to watch this season. Just about everything that could go wrong has for the Blues. From conceding goals minutes after scoring to making Goodison a place opposing teams look forward to playing at, Everton are just as lackluster and flat as they were last season. Even though Roberto Martinez has led the club to two cup semi-finals, the league form cannot go unnoticed, or unpunished.
Roberto could do no wrong in his first season at the club. His expansive attacking style, coupled with the defensive solidity that stood from Moyes time at the club, drew admiration far and wide. Pundits and papers even went so far as to tip him for the Barcelona job. But once the season ended, and Martinez got to further implement his style of play, the cracks began to show.To begin analyzing Martinez's capitulation, you need to go back to the 2014-15 pre-season. The World Cup had just ended and there was seemingly no plan for what the players were going to face as they fought to get fit for the coming season. This ignorance led to a very poor start in the league, as the club managed one win in the first two and a half months of the season. Though the Europa League was a bright spot, up until the farce that was Dynamo Kiev away, the league form never picked up. A winless Christmas period epitomized what was a dreadful 11th place finish.Roberto Martinez was given a lifeline by Bill Kenwright this season and has failed completely to repay the Everton chairman's confidence. Despite Kenwright's cries of "what a manager" after the FA Cup quarterfinal, it is plain for any supporter to see that Martinez has not delivered on his promises: to Kenwright, to us, and to his players.
The team that Martinez has put together has no heart and no fight. They consistently look lost on the pitch and the attack that he had rolling at the beginning of the campaign has morphed into the blunt and ponderous sham that was common last season. The players don't play for him, and on the rare occasions they've shown up this season, it has been for the fans, not the manager.
One of the most egregious examples of this lack of faith in Martinez is Ross Barkley. A young man playing for the club he loves should not be jogging to make tackles in his own third. Watching him play now is a travesty of what could be. Though he is only 22, it's plain to see that his sharpness and focus is off. Rather than spark a revival for the England midfielder, Martinez continues to praise him and bleat that "he is a diamond." A diamond he may be, but every gem needs to be polished.
Another fault of the Catalan is his failure to adapt to in-game situations. The substitutions that so often won him points in his first season have become mindless and random. When the team concedes a goal, there isn't a response to fight back. If they don't keep a clean sheet, they are odds on going to capitulate at some point. This has happened far too many times this season. Chelsea away, West Ham at home and Bournemouth away are just a few examples of the fragility of the squad.
However, I believe Martinez's most damning facet is his complete lack of tactical nous. I don't think he knows how to set up a team to win a game and relies far too much on the individual talent of his players. The squad that Everton have should not be struggling week in and week out against vastly inferior teams. This is illustrated vividly in Leighton Baines' comments on the lack of chemistry in the team. A senior player who has been around the club for nearly a decade wouldn't make those comments unless there was just cause.
Unfortunately for Martinez, his time at Everton seems to be coming to an end. The fans have nearly unanimously turned on him and it seems the players are as well. I held out as long as I could to give Roberto the chance to turn things around, but his unwillingness to address issues and adapt his style of play has turned his tenure sour. A FA Cup victory shouldn't save him, regardless of how long it's been since our last trophy. Our league form cannot be disregarded, and if we continue to drop, we will soon face the threat of relegation. Thank you for Lukaku and the memories, but it's time to go.
